NHAI Issues Urgent Directive for FASTag Validation to Prevent Revenue Evasion
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a decisive step to address potential revenue losses and enforcement gaps in the FASTag system. On Wednesday, the authority issued a directive requiring all banks that issue FASTags to conduct immediate validation of the vehicle registration numbers (VRNs) associated with the smart tags they have distributed.
Immediate Action Required from Banks
In a move aimed at tightening compliance, NHAI has instructed banks to blacklist any FASTags found to be linked to incorrect or invalid vehicle registration numbers. This validation process must be undertaken without delay to ensure the integrity of the electronic toll collection system across India's national highways.
Root Cause: Discrepancies in Vehicle Registration Data
The directive comes in response to multiple complaints where the VRN captured by FASTag readers did not match the registration number displayed on the vehicle's license plate. Such discrepancies have raised serious concerns about potential enforcement loopholes and revenue evasion.
"These mismatches have the potential to undermine enforcement mechanisms and may lead to evasion of government revenue," stated the highways authority in its official communication. "They could also attract penal provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act."
Historical FASTags Identified as Primary Concern
NHAI's investigation revealed that a significant number of these registration mismatches are associated with FASTags issued before the integration of the tags with the Vahan database. The Vahan database serves as the national register for vehicle registration details, and its integration with the FASTag system was implemented to enhance accuracy and prevent such discrepancies.
The authority emphasized that banks must prioritize validating these older FASTags to ensure they comply with current standards. This proactive measure is expected to strengthen toll collection efficiency and maintain the credibility of India's digital highway infrastructure.
