Navi Mumbai: Around 100 villages and tribal hamlets in Panvel experienced a nine-hour blackout between Thursday night and Friday morning after the power supply network of a 22KV high-tension line at Nere was damaged during excavation work for laying a Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) pipeline along the Akurli-Sukapur stretch.
Power Restoration Delayed
The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) could not restore power supply immediately due to the absence of alternative arrangements. Electricity was finally restored at 5:45 am on Friday, leaving residents without power through the night.
MSEDCL Threatens Action
Following massive public pressure, the power distribution company has threatened to initiate action against the MGL contractor for the serious lapse. The incident highlights ongoing coordination issues between agencies involved in infrastructure projects.
Ongoing Excavation Work
Excavation work to lay MGL pipelines is currently underway in various areas of Panvel taluka. However, lack of coordination between the two agencies has been taking a toll on citizens, leading to road blockades, traffic jams, and power outages. The power cut amid scorching summer heat resulted in widespread public frustration.
