Noida's Power Grid Gets Rs 97 Cr Boost: Upgrades to Start This Month
Noida power infra upgrade worth Rs 97 crore begins

The power department in Noida is gearing up to launch a significant infrastructure overhaul by the end of this month. The comprehensive upgrade and repair initiative will target the replacement of ageing cables and poles, fortification of transformers, and modernisation of substations across the city.

Immediate Upgrades and Funding Details

The first phase of this massive exercise involves work approved at a cost of Rs 97 crore. Sanjay Kumar Jain, the Chief Engineer of the Noida Power Department, confirmed that the necessary funds have been released by the Meerut headquarters. The department has already completed the requisite surveys, and the tender process for the project is expected to be announced shortly. The target for completing these specific upgrades is set for March 2026.

This immediate project is just the beginning of a larger transformation. Under the central government's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and Scada works, sanctioned in September 2024, a colossal investment of Rs 1,313 crore has been earmarked for Noida's power infrastructure enhancements over the next three years. This long-term plan allocates Rs 892 crore for system augmentation, Rs 396 crore for SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) works, and approximately Rs 25 crore for integrating smart technologies.

Parallel Projects for a Modern Grid

The modernisation drive will be executed through a combination of central and state government initiatives. It will introduce advanced features like online monitoring capabilities for better grid management and reliability.

Two key streams of work will run concurrently:

  • The annual infrastructure upgrade focused on replacing old, dilapidated cables, transformers, and poles.
  • The long-term RDSS/Scada works, which involve constructing new 33/11 kV substations, installing fresh distribution networks, deploying new transformers, and setting up modern control rooms.

Most of the initial focus will be on newer sectors along the Noida Expressway, while a portion of the work will also involve revamping the worn-out power infrastructure in the city's older sectors. The works planned under the RDSS scheme are scheduled to be carried out between December 2025 and 2027.

Impact and Future Outlook

This multi-crore investment is poised to significantly bolster Noida's power distribution network. The upgrades aim to reduce technical losses, minimise outage times, and provide a more stable and efficient electricity supply to both residential and industrial consumers. The integration of smart technology and SCADA systems will allow for real-time monitoring and quicker fault detection, leading to improved service delivery.

The parallel execution of immediate repair works and long-term strategic projects indicates a holistic approach by the authorities to future-proof the city's essential power infrastructure, supporting its continued growth and development.
