Noida Residents Protest Smart Meter Issues: Overbilling, Disconnections Spark UPPCL Action
Noida Smart Meter Protests: UPPCL Holds Grievance Camps Amid Complaints

Noida Residents Voice Frustration Over Smart Meter Implementation

Mounting complaints regarding smart meters in Noida have compelled the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) to take immediate action. Through its PVVNL wing, the corporation has organized special grievance redressal camps in Sectors 34 and 82 to address widespread consumer grievances. These issues range from severe overbilling problems to sudden and unexpected power disconnections, creating significant distress among local residents.

Residents Demand Solutions at Sector 34 Meeting

At a recent gathering organized by the Federation of Resident Welfare Associations (FORWAs) in Sector 34, approximately 2,000 residents voiced their concerns. The primary complaints centered on inflated electricity bills, malfunctioning smart meters, and highly erratic power supply. Many attendees demanded the immediate replacement of defective devices and requested verification through check meters to identify billing discrepancies accurately.

Residents also urged authorities to implement a minimum balance buffer before initiating disconnections, citing considerable financial strain. KK Jain, president of the federation, emphasized that the peak billing period has only intensified calls for urgent intervention. He proposed that power supply should remain uninterrupted for accounts with a limited negative balance. Jain further stressed the critical need for regular SMS alerts to keep consumers informed about their billing status and account updates.

Summer Concerns and Official Responses

With summer temperatures approaching, concerns over power reliability have intensified dramatically. Dharmendra Sharma, general secretary of FORWA Sector 34, called for urgent maintenance of feeder lines and meter panels to prevent widespread outages during the hot season. In response to these complaints, UPPCL executive engineer Mohit Dixit announced that a negative balance limit of up to Rs 2,000 would be introduced to ease the consumer burden. He added that comprehensive infrastructure upgrades are currently underway to improve overall supply stability across Noida.

Similar Issues Surface in Sector 82

A parallel grievance camp held in Sector 82's EWS Pocket-7 revealed identical problems. Residents reported experiencing prolonged power outages even after making full bill payments. RWA president Raghavendra Dubey criticized the smart meter system harshly, describing it as a "noose around the people's necks." He added that this situation exacerbates the distress faced by families, particularly those with young children who depend on consistent electricity for daily needs.

Additional complaints focused on the poor responsiveness of the official 1912 helpline, though attending officials assured residents that all grievances would be addressed promptly through these special camps.

Widespread Disruption in Sector 19

Significant trouble was also reported in Sector 19, where around 5,200 families faced major disruption after smart meters were abruptly shifted to prepaid mode without prior notice. RWA general secretary Laxmi Narain explained, "The implementation of smart meters began about six to seven months ago... But its hasty implementation without prior information and proper consumer education led to widespread outages and confusion."

PVVNL chief engineer Sanjay Kumar Jain acknowledged the accelerated transition process. "We are committed to resolving these complaints by organizing special camps and improving communication with consumers," he stated. Approximately 40,000 smart meters have been installed across various sectors in Noida so far as part of this modernization initiative.
