Odisha Vigilance Arrests JE for Embezzling Rs 9.70 Lakh Street Light Funds
Odisha engineer held for misappropriating Rs 9.70 lakh

In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Odisha Vigilance department on Tuesday arrested a junior engineer in Kendrapada district for allegedly siphoning off government funds earmarked for a crucial rural electrification project.

Engineer Accused of Diverting Development Funds

Ratnesh Kumar Pandey, the arrested junior engineer, stands accused of misappropriating approximately Rs 9.70 lakh. This substantial sum was officially sanctioned for the 'Electrification Project of Street Lights' within the Pattamundai block during the 2023-24 financial year.

Vigilance investigators uncovered that Pandey illegally diverted money from the Gram Panchayat (GP) developmental fund. The probe revealed that he transferred the allocated amount directly into his personal bank account, thereby depriving the community of essential public lighting infrastructure.

Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation

The authorities have booked the accused under stringent sections of the anti-corruption law. The case has been registered under sections 12, 13(2), and 13(1)(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, which deal with criminal misconduct by a public servant.

Following his arrest, Pandey was presented before the court of the Special Judge (Vigilance) in Cuttack. The vigilance department has emphasized that the investigation is still active. Officials are working to gather further evidence to fully uncover the extent of the financial misappropriation and to determine if any other individuals were involved in the scheme.

A Blow to Rural Development Initiatives

This case highlights a serious breach of trust and a direct attack on rural development works. The misused funds were intended to improve street lighting, a basic amenity that enhances safety and security in villages after dark. Such acts of corruption ultimately delay development and erode public faith in government schemes.

The arrest sends a strong message about the state's commitment to rooting out corruption at all levels. The Vigilance department's proactive action in Kendrapada is part of a broader effort to ensure that funds for public welfare projects reach their intended purpose and beneficiaries.
