Odisha Unveils Major Power Infrastructure Upgrade with Rs 600 Crore Investment

In a significant development for Odisha's energy sector, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated three new grid substations and eight critical transmission lines on Thursday. This substantial infrastructure project, established at a cost of approximately Rs 600 crore, is set to benefit an impressive 22 lakh consumers across the capital region.

Strategic Locations and Enhanced Connectivity

The newly established grid substations are strategically located at Balianta and Satya Nagar in Bhubaneswar, along with another at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. This infrastructure marks a pivotal step in creating an alternative power source for Bhubaneswar, addressing long-standing reliability concerns in the state's urban centers.

"With this development, Bhubaneswar now has access to an alternative power source," stated Chief Minister Majhi during the inauguration ceremony. "In the coming days, we will establish multiple feeder lines connecting Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, ensuring residents receive continuous, high-quality electricity service."

Overcoming Delays and Accelerating Progress

The Chief Minister acknowledged that these crucial projects faced significant delays due to court cases and various operational challenges. However, after the new government assumed responsibility, these projects received top priority. All existing problems were systematically resolved, allowing construction to commence approximately one year ago.

Future-Proofing Odisha's Power Infrastructure

Looking ahead, Majhi emphasized the growing electricity demands of Bhubaneswar. "The city's current electricity demand of 1,000 megawatts is projected to reach 2,000 megawatts by 2030," he explained. "To address this exponential growth, the state government is fully committed to strengthening and modernizing our electricity infrastructure, keeping pace with Bhubaneswar's future development."

The newly inaugurated Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) grid substations and their associated transmission lines are specifically designed to ensure uninterrupted, high-quality, and reliable electricity supply throughout the capital region. This enhanced infrastructure is expected to accelerate overall development across multiple sectors including industry, business, information technology, and urban living standards.

Technological Advancements and State Leadership

In a notable achievement for Odisha, Majhi revealed that the state has constructed its first-ever digital grid substation. Additionally, plans are underway to develop a sophisticated 765 kV transmission system specifically for the capital. In subsequent phases, various grid substations in both Cuttack and Bhubaneswar will be supplied through multiple feeders, significantly enhancing stability in electricity distribution.

"This multi-feeder approach will bring greater stability to our electricity supply network," Majhi added. "It will substantially improve our capability to provide quality, uninterrupted electricity service to all consumers."

Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited (OPTCL) continues to demonstrate national leadership in power management. Remarkably, OPTCL stands as the only power transmission organization in India managing 70 grid substations through remote operations, showcasing the state's technological advancement in energy management.

Immediate Benefits and Future Directions

Following a comprehensive review of the current situation, Chief Minister Majhi directed Tata Power to provide three additional feeders to supply electricity to several areas including Bhingarpur, Uttampur, Gangeshwar, Pandara, Jagannath Nagar, Mangaraj, Palasuni, and adjacent regions.

Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo assured citizens that the establishment of these three new grid substations will effectively eliminate low voltage problems that have plagued consumers. "People will no longer face persistent low voltage issues," Deo confidently stated.
