The Parli Municipal Council in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is set to impose a ban on the sale of meat every Monday, responding to a long-standing demand from devotees. Monday is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the Vaidyanath temple in Parli attracts thousands of pilgrims from across India.
Proposal Cleared by Standing Committee
The standing committee of the local civic body has already cleared the proposal. It will now be formally approved by the general body in its meeting scheduled for April 30. Once passed, the ban will apply to all meat shops and restaurants serving non-vegetarian items.
Official Statements
Padmashree Dharmadhikari, President of the Parli Municipal Council, stated, "It has been a long-pending demand from devotees and various organisations that meat should be banned in Parli every Monday. We supported the demand unequivocally." She added, "After the general body meeting passes the necessary resolution, we will share our resolve with different government departments for its implementation. The ban will be imposed within a strong legal framework."
Bajirao Dharmadhikari, Corporator and former municipal president of Parli, noted that the town has around 80 meat shops and a significant number of restaurants that serve non-vegetarian food. "There will be a blanket ban on meat every Monday. Shops as well as hotels and restaurants will be barred from serving meat. We will be holding a meeting with establishments to inform them about the ban and seek necessary cooperation," he said.
Activist Pressure
While several social organisations have been demanding a Monday meat ban in Parli, activist Shivkumar Kedari recently warned of an indefinite hunger strike if the ban was not imposed promptly. This pressure has contributed to the council's swift action.
The ban is expected to be enforced strictly, with legal backing, to ensure compliance from all meat vendors and eateries in the town.
