Patna District Magistrate Orders Surprise Hospital Inspections to Curb Illegal Activities
In a decisive move to enhance healthcare integrity, the Patna district administration, under the directive of District Magistrate Thiyagarajan S M, conducted unannounced inspections at three prominent government hospitals on Tuesday. The targeted facilities included Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), New Gardiner Hospital, and Lok Nayak Jay Prakash Narayan Hospital. This initiative aims to address and eliminate unlawful practices that compromise patient welfare and public service efficiency.
Inspection Details and Immediate Actions Taken
The flying squad, comprising the additional district magistrate, police officers, and health department officials, executed thorough checks across various hospital sections. These included outpatient departments (OPDs), medicine distribution centers, pathology labs, emergency wards, and blood banks. During the inspections, officials issued challans to eight vehicles and ambulances, collecting a total fine of Rs 72,000 for violations such as unauthorized parking and other regulatory breaches.
At PMCH, the team specifically scrutinized private ambulances, issuing warnings to vehicle owners against parking in restricted areas. At New Gardiner Hospital, the presence of medical representatives was reported to the director for further investigation. Meanwhile, at Lok Nayak Jay Prakash Narayan Hospital, the squad monitored facilities and mandated a detailed report on the removal of middlemen who exploit patients.
Ongoing Crackdown on Exploitation and Negligence
District Magistrate Thiyagarajan S M emphasized that these inspections are part of a broader, regular effort to curb illegal activities within health institutions. He highlighted a recent incident where a suspicious individual was apprehended at PMCH for patient exploitation, leading to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR). Additionally, on February 4, a sanitation worker was dismissed for extorting money from patients, underscoring the administration's zero-tolerance policy.
Prior to this, the administration had already filed FIRs against two individuals at NMCH for similar illegal activities. In a significant directive, the district magistrate has now ordered hospital administrations to ban the entry of private ambulances onto the premises to prevent further misconduct and ensure patient safety.
Addressing Systemic Issues and Future Measures
The district administration has received multiple reports indicating that personnel from private clinics and pharmacies are misleading patients at government hospitals, thereby obstructing public services. Legal actions are being pursued against such individuals, with the district magistrate affirming that any government employees found involved will face disciplinary proceedings. He stressed that officials must remain vigilant, as negligence will result in legal consequences to uphold accountability and transparency in healthcare delivery.
This proactive approach by the Patna district administration reflects a committed effort to sanitize the healthcare environment, protect patient rights, and restore trust in public health institutions through stringent monitoring and enforcement.
