BUIDCO MD Sets May 15 Deadline for Patna Drainage Project Completion
In a significant move to address Patna's chronic waterlogging issues, Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (BUIDCO) Managing Director Animesh Kumar Parashar conducted a thorough inspection of ongoing construction works for new drains and drainage pumping stations (DPS) in the city on Wednesday. During the visit, Parashar issued clear instructions to officials, emphasizing the urgency of completing all remaining tasks by May 15. This deadline is crucial to ensure the entire drainage system becomes fully operational well in advance of the upcoming monsoon season, aiming to prevent the annual inundation that plagues many areas.
Key Project Components and Progress Updates
Parashar highlighted that the construction of a culvert linking the DPS to the nala is currently in its final stages, and he stressed the need for its swift completion without any delays. He described this project as a major step towards providing a permanent solution to Patna's persistent waterlogging problem. The new system is designed to facilitate the quick drainage of rainwater from several parts of Kankarbagh, a locality frequently affected by flooding during heavy rains.
One of the central elements of this initiative is the Nandlal Chapra DPS, strategically located near the Bhootnath Metro Station. This pumping station is being connected to the Yogipur Nala, with water from the nala being diverted to the newly built facility. This diversion is expected to enable more efficient management of excess rainwater during intense rainfall spells, thereby enhancing the overall drainage performance by increasing capacity and reducing pressure on older infrastructure like the existing Pahari DPS.
Expected Benefits and Long-Term Impact
Officials involved in the project have noted that diverting water to the new DPS will significantly reduce the excess load on the Pahari DPS, thereby strengthening Patna's overall drainage network. This improvement is anticipated to provide long-term relief to residents of Kankarbagh and nearby areas, which routinely face inundation and disruption during the monsoon months. By enhancing the city's resilience to waterlogging, the project aims to improve urban living conditions and mitigate the economic and social impacts of seasonal flooding.
The inspection and subsequent directives underscore BUIDCO's commitment to upgrading Patna's urban infrastructure, with a focus on timely execution and effective monsoon preparedness. As the May 15 deadline approaches, officials are working diligently to meet the targets, ensuring that the new drainage systems are ready to handle the challenges of the rainy season and contribute to a more sustainable urban environment in Bihar's capital.
