Patna's JP Ganga Path Shop Plan Redesigned to Preserve River Views
Patna Ganga Path Shops Redesigned for River Views

The ambitious plan to install 500 pre-fabricated commercial shops along a 2-kilometer stretch of Patna's JP Ganga Path has encountered significant redesign requirements following intervention from higher authorities concerned about obstructing the scenic river view. The project, which spans between the Digha roundabout and Kurji, was initially conceived with permanent structures but faced restrictions from the National Green Tribunal regarding construction on the river bed.

Authorities Raise Concerns About Visual Access

Sources within the Patna Municipal Corporation revealed that although manufacturing had already begun with 200 units completed, the chief minister's office expressed specific concerns about the closed design of these structures blocking the panoramic view of the Ganga River. This visual access preservation is particularly crucial as the riverfront is being developed as a prime tourist destination for the city, aiming to enhance Patna's appeal to both domestic and international visitors.

Smart City Corporation Implements Redesign

In response to these concerns, the Patna Smart City Limited has undertaken a comprehensive redesign of the commercial units. According to PSCL Public Relations Officer Priya Saurabh, "Two redesigned samples have been produced as open modular structures specifically to maintain visual access to the river. Further production and cost assessments will depend entirely on the approval of these new samples by the relevant authorities."

The 200 existing closed units, which represent a substantial investment, are currently being held in a storage yard. A proposal is under active consideration to hand these units over to Jeevika self-help groups for alternative uses, potentially repurposing them for community development initiatives or other municipal needs.

Comprehensive Beautification Project Details

The JP Ganga Path beautification project represents a major urban development initiative spanning over 4.5 kilometers with an estimated total cost of Rs 48 crore. This comprehensive plan includes multiple components designed to enhance public spaces and recreational facilities along the riverfront.

Project Components and Phases

The development includes installation of aesthetic lighting systems, approximately 90,000 plantations to enhance greenery, open gym facilities for public fitness, comfortable seating areas for visitors, a creatively designed zigzag park, and designated vending zones for commercial activities.

The project has been divided into two distinct phases:

  • The first phase extends from Digha roundabout to LCT ghat with an estimated cost of Rs 36 crore
  • The second phase continues from LCT ghat to Gandhi Maidan with an estimated budget of Rs 11 crore

As part of the second phase development, the zigzag park is being substantially extended by 1,440 meters from LCT ghat toward Gandhi Maidan, creating additional recreational space for Patna residents and visitors.

Designated Commercial-Free Zone

A significant feature of the development plan includes establishing a designated no-vending zone covering approximately 650 meters between Kurji and LCT ghat. This section is specifically intended to remain completely clear of commercial stalls and structures to facilitate uninterrupted walking paths and leisure activities directly alongside the river, ensuring visitors can enjoy the natural beauty without commercial obstructions.

Project Oversight and Timeline

PMC commissioner and PSCL managing director Yashpal Meena, who is personally overseeing the beautification process, confirmed that the work is being expedited and is nearing completion. The careful balancing of commercial development with environmental preservation and aesthetic considerations reflects the city administration's commitment to creating sustainable urban spaces that serve multiple community needs while protecting Patna's natural heritage along the Ganga River.
