Patna Conducts Extensive Earthquake Mock Drill to Enhance Disaster Preparedness
The district administration in Patna organized a large-scale earthquake mock drill across seven critical locations in the city on Thursday. This exercise was implemented as a follow-up to an earlier table-top simulation, designed to rigorously test system responses to emergency scenarios involving structural damage and fires.
Key Agencies and Teams Involved in the Drill
Participating agencies included the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Army, local police forces, and various municipal departments. Additionally, seven specialized teams from the Bihar Regimental Centre and MH Danapur actively contributed to the drill, showcasing a collaborative effort in disaster management.
Locations Targeted for the Mock Exercise
The drill was strategically carried out at the following seven sites across Patna:
- Patna Collectorate
- JD Women’s College
- Biscomaun Bhawan
- City Centre Mall
- JP Setu
- Gandhi Maidan
- IGIMS
These locations were selected to represent a diverse range of public and institutional spaces, ensuring comprehensive testing of emergency protocols.
Objectives and Significance of the Drill
Officials emphasized that the primary aim of this exercise was to assess and enhance inter-agency coordination and overall preparedness for seismic events. They highlighted that Patna is situated in Seismic Zone IV, making it highly vulnerable to earthquakes. The mock drill served as a critical evaluation of response mechanisms, identifying areas for improvement in disaster mitigation strategies.
This initiative underscores the city's proactive approach to disaster risk reduction, aiming to safeguard residents and infrastructure against potential earthquake threats through regular training and simulations.
