Pimpri Chinchwad Power Crisis: Residents Fume Over Prolonged, Unexplained Outages
Large sections of Pimpri Chinchwad have been plunged into a severe power crisis over recent days, with repeated and prolonged electricity outages causing widespread distress and anger among residents. Areas such as Akurdi, Nigdi, Pradhikaran, and Wakad are particularly affected, where daily life has been severely disrupted by constant power cuts.
Residents Voice Frustration Over Unbearable Conditions
For many, the outages have been sudden, long-lasting, and unforgiving. Pramod Kale, a resident of Sector 24 in Pradhikaran, described a sharp deterioration in the situation over the past week. "Earlier this week, electricity went off at night and only returned the next afternoon. With soaring temperatures, living without power is unbearable," he said, highlighting the extreme discomfort faced by families.
The distress is echoed across neighborhoods. Sheetal More, who lives nearby, reported that prolonged blackouts have become a daily ordeal. "Brief cuts are understandable, but now power is gone for hours at a stretch. Two days ago, it went off around 2 am and returned only the next afternoon. It honestly feels like we are living in a rural area, not a city," she lamented, underscoring the urban-rural divide in service quality.
Patterns of Outages and Lack of Communication
In Walhekarwadi, residents noted a slightly different but equally troubling pattern. Manish Chugh explained, "Earlier, power cuts were occasional. Now they happen regularly, and no one tells us why." Adding to the confusion is the absence of any official communication from authorities. Several residents alleged that, although no announcement had been made, the erratic supply felt uncannily like intentional load shedding by the power utility.
Wakad resident Kiran Vadgama pointed out frequent outages, especially in housing societies around Chaudhary Park last week. "Aging underground power cables in Wakad and Pimple Saudagar are a longstanding problem. Fault detection takes time and repairs drag on. Replacing these old underground lines is the only permanent solution, but that has been pending for years," he said. Vadgama added that the issue was flagged around four years ago, with replacing the underground power infrastructure estimated at Rs 180 crore, but the proposal never moved forward.
Another Wakad resident reported intermittent power failures lasting two to three hours consistently over the last two to three weeks. "We have complained to local corporators, who promised to raise the issue with the concerned authorities," he said, indicating community efforts to seek redress.
Official Response and Denials
Officials from the Bhosari and Pimpri divisions of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) denied claims of widespread or recurring outages. They attributed recent disruptions to rain-related faults and infrastructure damage. An official stated, "In Nigdi, Akurdi, and Pradhikaran, power cables were damaged during ongoing Metro works earlier this week. This affected two substations and resulted in prolonged outages. There has been no intentional load shedding." This explanation contrasts sharply with resident accounts, pointing to a gap in perception and communication.
The power crisis in Pimpri Chinchwad highlights critical infrastructure challenges and the urgent need for upgrades to prevent future disruptions. As temperatures rise and demands on the grid increase, resolving these issues becomes paramount for the well-being of the community.
