PM Modi cuts convoy size by 50% to promote austerity

In a significant move towards austerity, the size of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official convoy has been reduced at his own behest, setting a precedent for others in the government to follow. Sources indicate that the Prime Minister has directed the Special Protection Group (SPG), the elite security force responsible for his safety, to cut the number of vehicles in his motorcade by half. Additionally, he has expressed a desire to increase the use of electric vehicles in the fleet, but without incurring additional expenditure through new purchases.

Implementation Without Compromising Security

The SPG has already begun implementing these instructions, ensuring that mandatory security protocols outlined in the 'Blue Book' are not compromised. Sources report that the convoy appeared noticeably slimmer during the Prime Minister's recent visits outside Delhi. The SPG will build on this initial step to devise methods for strict adherence to the comprehensive dos and don'ts of the Blue Book.

PM's Call for Reduced Consumption

During his visit to Hyderabad on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi urged citizens to reduce fuel and gold consumption. Those familiar with the developments interpret the Prime Minister's personal initiative as a clear signal for the rest of the government to follow suit swiftly. There are indications that various ministries and departments are preparing to implement austerity measures in the coming days. These measures may include encouraging staff to use the Metro more frequently, opting for carpooling, and avoiding large banquets.

An official stated, "There are discussions across departments to identify all possible steps to reduce fuel consumption. The PM's message is for everyone, including us. We are awaiting communication from the Department of Personnel and Training detailing specific actions, but each department will need to devise its own plans."

High-Level Discussions on Fuel Reduction

The issue of reducing fuel usage by minimizing unnecessary travel was discussed during an informal meeting of ministers chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday. This meeting further underscored the government's commitment to austerity and resource conservation.
