PM Modi Inaugurates Major Infrastructure Projects in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Chennai on Saturday, dedicated a series of completed national projects and laid foundation stones for several new initiatives across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Sunday. The comprehensive development push involves projects with a combined value exceeding Rs 7,100 crore, aimed at boosting connectivity, industry, and regional growth.

Enhancing Rail and Road Connectivity

In a significant move for urban transport, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Chennai Beach-Chennai Egmore fourth line. This critical addition to the Chennai suburban rail network is designed to substantially improve operational efficiency by enabling additional passenger and freight services, easing congestion in one of India's busiest metropolitan areas.

Highway development received major emphasis, with Modi laying the foundation stone for the four-laning of the Marakanam–Puducherry National Highway. This project is expected to cut traffic congestion in Puducherry's urban zones dramatically and reduce travel time by approximately 50%, from about an hour to just 30 minutes. It will provide seamless connectivity among key national and state highways, improving access to prominent destinations like Mamallapuram, the Kalpakkam atomic power station, and Auroville. Furthermore, it will strengthen links between coastal villages and the Villupuram district headquarters, fostering tourism and economic activity across the region.

Puducherry's Development Boost

In Puducherry, Modi dedicated various development projects valued at over Rs 2,700 crore to the nation. A highlight is the expansive 750-acre Karasur-Sedarapet Industrial Estate, which is set to house a pharmaceutical park, a textile park, an IT Park, a state-of-the-art research and development centre from IIT Madras, and advanced healthcare facilities from Jipmer. This integrated estate aims to position Puducherry as a hub for innovation and industry in South India.

Madurai's Infrastructure Transformation

Traveling to Madurai, the Prime Minister dedicated completed projects and laid foundation stones for new infrastructure initiatives together worth over Rs 4,400 crore. He inaugurated the Paramakudi–Ramanathapuram National Highway, with its four-laning set to provide faster access to major religious destinations such as Madurai, Rameswaram, and Dhanushkodi. Travel time on this stretch will be reduced from one hour to around 35 minutes.

This corridor will significantly enhance multi-modal connectivity by linking major railway stations at Madurai and Rameswaram, airports at Madurai and INS Parundu, and non-major ports at Pamban and Rameswaram. It will integrate key economic nodes, including fishing clusters, a special economic zone, a mega food park, and a textile cluster, thereby catalysing trade, industry, and socio-economic development across the region.

Modernizing Railway Stations and Broadcasting

Modi inaugurated eight redeveloped railway stations at Morappur, Bommidi, Srivilliputtur, Sholavandan, Manaparai, Pollachi Junction, Karaikkudi Junction, and Tiruvarur Junction. These stations have been upgraded with modern passenger-centric amenities while thoughtfully incorporating local architectural elements and cultural aesthetics. Enhancements include:

  • Improved accessibility and enhanced station buildings
  • Modern waiting halls, lifts, and escalators
  • Upgraded platforms and Divyangjan-friendly facilities

Additionally, the Prime Minister inaugurated three new FM relay transmitters at Kumbakonam, Yercaud, and Vellore. These transmitters will expand regional coverage and ensure uninterrupted FM broadcasting, improving access to information and entertainment for local communities.

This extensive project inauguration underscores the government's focus on strengthening infrastructure in South India, with anticipated benefits for transportation, industry, tourism, and overall economic growth in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
