Pune Municipal Corporation Launches Night Drive Against Illegal Hawkers

In a decisive move to reclaim public spaces, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) executed a late-night operation on Monday, targeting illegal hawkers across several key stretches in the Deccan area. The civic body's team not only cleared these unauthorized vendors but also confiscated their belongings as part of a broader crackdown on those operating outside prescribed hours and without proper permits.

Encroachment and Hygiene Issues Cited

PMC officials highlighted that these vendors, which include numerous food stall operators, were blatantly flouting regulations by setting up shop without the necessary authorizations. More critically, their activities led to significant footpath encroachment, severely obstructing pedestrian movement. The trash and waste dumped by these hawkers on the walkways rendered them nearly unusable, posing both safety and hygiene risks to the public.

"The central team spearheaded this action. More such actions are on the horizon," stated Prithviraj BP, Additional Commissioner of the PMC. This statement underscores the administration's commitment to a sustained effort against unauthorized vending, signaling that this drive is not a one-off event but part of an ongoing strategy.

Expanding the Scope of the Crackdown

The civic administration has been actively conducting similar drives in other prominent areas of Pune, including Sinhagad Road, Satara Road, FC Road, and JM Road. This indicates a city-wide approach to tackling the issue of illegal hawking, which has long been a concern for both authorities and residents.

Citizens have largely welcomed these initiatives, expressing relief at the prospect of clearer, safer footpaths and reduced clutter. The positive public response highlights the community's support for measures that enhance urban livability and order.

The PMC's actions reflect a growing emphasis on enforcing civic regulations to improve public infrastructure and ensure that shared spaces remain accessible and clean for all pedestrians.
