PMC Initiates Feasibility Study for Ambedkar Chowk Flyover to Combat Karve Road Congestion
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to undertake a comprehensive feasibility study to evaluate the potential construction of a flyover or grade separator at Ambedkar Chowk on Karve Road in the Karvenagar area. This initiative aims to address persistent traffic congestion that plagues this key junction.
Detailed Survey to Guide Infrastructure Decision
PMC officials have outlined plans to appoint a specialized agency to conduct an in-depth analysis of vehicle movement at Ambedkar Chowk. The study will focus on traffic patterns, particularly for vehicles heading towards Warje Bypass Chowk, and assess the availability of space for constructing either a flyover or a grade separator. Based on the findings, the civic administration will make a definitive decision between these two infrastructure options.
A source within the administration indicated that if the study deems it feasible, a flyover would be the preferred choice, taking into account the current traffic volume and flow dynamics.
Consultant Appointment for Proper Planning and Design
An official from the PMC emphasized that the primary purpose of hiring a consultant is to ensure meticulous designing and planning of the proposed flyover or grade separator, along with effective traffic management strategies. "The administration has not yet determined the cost of the flyover project, as the proposal is still in the preliminary study phase," the official stated.
If the feasibility study yields positive results, this would mark the second flyover on Karve Road in the Karvenagar area. The PMC previously constructed a flyover near Dahanukar Colony Chowk several years ago, which successfully alleviated congestion in that vicinity.
Residents Voice Support and Concerns
Regular commuters and local residents have expressed optimism about the potential benefits of a new flyover. Sandip Shinde, a resident of the area, highlighted the complex traffic dynamics: "Two canal roads originate from Ambedkar Chowk. One small road travels towards Warje Naka, while another connects to the Warje water works. The entire area witnesses significant vehicular movement, and a properly designed flyover or grade separator is crucial."
Atul Soman, another resident, urged the administration to not only focus on constructing a flyover but also to streamline traffic from Ambedkar Chowk towards the bypass. He pointed out that encroachments and illegal parking currently hamper traffic flow, warning that the situation could become critical once Metro and flyover construction begins in the area.
Challenges with Metro Alignment Integration
PMC officials acknowledged that planning a flyover at Ambedkar Chowk presents significant challenges. This is due to the recent approval of a new elevated Metro line extending to Warje, which will cross directly over Ambedkar Chowk. The PMC must carefully design the flyover to align with the Metro's infrastructure, ensuring compatibility and minimizing disruptions during construction and operation.
The feasibility study is expected to provide a clear roadmap for this critical infrastructure project, balancing traffic relief with urban planning constraints in one of Pune's busiest areas.
