In the midst of a severe LPG cylinder shortage gripping Prayagraj, a new wave of chaos has emerged as consumers flock to gas agencies to complete their e-KYC verification. The situation has created long queues and confusion, with residents fearing they will be unable to book cylinders online once the mandatory lock-in period expires.
Agencies Prioritize e-KYC Compliant Customers Amid Supply Crunch
Gas agency owners report that deliveries are currently being prioritized for customers who have successfully completed their e-KYC process and received delivery codes. "LPG cylinders are still reaching those e-KYC customers who've obtained their delivery codes," stated one agency owner, emphasizing that this measure aims to prevent genuine consumers from facing undue hardship.
The move is part of a broader strategy by oil companies and distributors to ensure balanced supply distribution and curb panic bookings. Distributors have received explicit instructions to heighten vigilance regarding e-KYC compliance, with agency owners noting that approximately 90% of customers have already completed the verification.
Address Changes and Verification Delays Add to Backlog
For the remaining 10% of customers, delays are primarily attributed to address changes or incomplete verification processes by original account holders. An agency owner on Stanley Road explained, "In remaining cases, there was either a change of address or the original customer was yet to complete the process."
Despite district authorities claiming no official shortage, consumers flooded distributor offices on Sunday after experiencing frustrations with missed calls and unresponsive IVRS systems. Many who booked cylinders between March 5 and 8 are still awaiting deliveries, as agencies work diligently to clear the backlog while relying on additional cooking gas supplies from oil companies.
Commercial Cylinder Crunch Drives Shift to Coal Stoves
The shortage has particularly impacted small traders and commercial users, who are increasingly turning to coal stoves as an alternative. This shift has triggered a noticeable rise in coal prices, with one quintal now costing Rs 1,950—a significant increase from the previous rate of Rs 1,750.
The combined pressures of e-KYC verification delays, supply chain constraints, and rising alternative fuel costs are creating a multifaceted crisis in Prayagraj's domestic and commercial energy sectors.
