Prayagraj MetroLite Network Undergoes Major Expansion to 60 Kilometers
In a significant development for urban infrastructure, the proposed MetroLite network in Prayagraj has been substantially expanded, with its total length increasing from the initially planned 44 kilometers to nearly 60 kilometers. This expansion aligns with guidelines from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and represents a major boost to the city's public transport system.
Enhanced Connectivity with Airport and Ropeway Integration
The revised plan now includes the Prayagraj airport within the MetroLite network, marking a crucial enhancement for regional connectivity. Additionally, the network will extend to connect the Sangam area up to the proposed ropeway route, creating a seamless transit experience for residents and visitors alike. Officials emphasize that this integration will significantly strengthen urban connectivity across key areas.
Project officials stated that the expansion will increase the total number of metro stations from 39 to 45, while the overall project cost is now estimated to exceed Rs 12,000 crore. This revised blueprint is designed to provide superior access to new and upcoming townships, linking them directly with major transit hubs such as railway stations, bus stands, and pivotal city locations including the Sangam.
Detailed Corridor Plans and Operational Framework
The MetroLite system will operate on two primary corridors, each with specific enhancements under the new plan:
- First Corridor: Originally planned between Bamrauli and Jhunsi city lake covering 23 kilometers, this route has now been extended to approximately 39 kilometers. The extension incorporates connectivity to the airport and the ropeway, vastly improving its reach.
- Second Corridor: This will run from Shantipuram to Chhioki, covering about 21 kilometers, maintaining its initial scope but benefiting from the overall network expansion.
In the first phase of construction, 26 stations will be built on the Bamrauli-Jhunsi city lake stretch, while 19 stations are planned between Shantipuram and Chhioki. To ensure efficient passenger movement, each station will have a stoppage time of one to two minutes, minimizing delays and enhancing travel fluidity.
Implementation Timeline and Survey Activities
The process of laying tracks is scheduled to commence in August, pending necessary approvals. State government approval is anticipated between April and May, setting the stage for rapid progress. A fresh survey will be conducted shortly to determine the exact locations of the newly added stations, ensuring precision in planning and execution.
Rishiraj, Vice-Chairman of the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA), highlighted that the inclusion of the airport and extended routes will dramatically improve connectivity across the trans-Ganga and trans-Yamuna regions. He also noted that this expansion is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the city, contributing to smoother urban mobility.
Strategic Impact on Urban Development
The expanded MetroLite network is widely regarded as a pivotal step toward modernizing public transport in Prayagraj. It is poised to support the city's rapid urban growth by providing a reliable, efficient, and accessible transit option. This initiative not only addresses current transportation needs but also lays a foundation for future urban expansion and sustainability.
By integrating key infrastructure like the airport and ropeway, the MetroLite project aims to transform Prayagraj into a model of connected urban living, fostering economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for its inhabitants.
