Pre-monsoon downpours last week and on Monday exposed gaps in Bhopal's preparedness, as clogged drains and ongoing infrastructure work left several roads waterlogged and traffic snarled across the city.
Waterlogging disrupts traffic
Minutes of heavy rain turned stretches of major thoroughfares into standing pools, creating long vehicle queues and slowing ambulances. Near Kamla Park, water overflowed from drainage channels.
A low-level road that once connected to Lower Lake now experiences knee-high waterlogging after interventions under the AMRUT project, residents said.
Shymala Hills road damaged
In Shymala Hills, adjacent to Khushboo Park, residents blamed overflow from a BMC filtration plant for washing away about 300 metres of roadway.
BRTS corridor worst hit
The busy BRTS corridor was among the worst hit, with sections remaining waterlogged until almost midnight, leaving commuters stranded and pedestrians wading through.
Ongoing construction worsens conditions
Waterlogging has affected both older and newer parts of the city, worsening where roadworks and utility excavations are underway. Incomplete construction for sewage lines and other projects left surfaces broken and exposed, which filled with rain and created hazardous driving conditions. Metro construction along the Berasia Road–Sindhi Colony corridor compounded the problems. Pillar work between Karond Square and Sindhi Colony — passing Krishi Upaj Mandi Samiti, Arif Nagar and DIG Bungalow — left pothole-strewn central sections that waterlogged quickly.
Other affected areas
Similar conditions were reported on Raisen Road from Ratnagiri to Piplani, JK Road and Prabhat Square.
Stagnant water lingered for hours in prominent localities including Station Road, undermining BMC claims that drainage improvements have been completed.
