Chandigarh: Punjab jails minister Dr Ravjot Singh on Monday issued a stern warning to jail superintendents and other officials, stating that they would be held accountable for any violent incident, security breach, or administrative lapse inside prisons. Chairing a review meeting with superintendents of prisons across the state at Punjab Bhawan, the minister emphasized that incidents of violence in jails would not be tolerated and responsibility would be fixed on the concerned officials.
Minister's Directives
Dr Ravjot Singh directed prison authorities to adopt a result-oriented approach, regularly review their performance, and take corrective measures wherever shortcomings were identified. He stressed the need for proactive management to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the smooth functioning of prison facilities.
Focus on Rehabilitation
The minister also asked jail authorities to strengthen education, skill development, healthcare, and counselling programs for inmates. These initiatives are aimed at facilitating their rehabilitation and reintegration into society, reducing the likelihood of reoffending. The minister highlighted that such programs are crucial for transforming prisons into centers of reform rather than mere detention centers.
During the meeting, superintendents were urged to implement best practices and ensure that all security protocols are strictly followed. The minister's warning comes in the wake of recent concerns over prison management and the need for improved oversight.
