Punjab to Add 1,265 New Buses to Public Transport Fleet

Punjab Government Announces Major Public Transport Expansion

In a significant move to enhance public transportation infrastructure, Punjab Finance and Transport Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced on Sunday that the state government is set to add a massive fleet of 1,265 new buses to its public transport network. This ambitious expansion includes 659 buses for the PEPSU Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) and 606 buses for the PUNBUS fleet.

Comprehensive Fleet Enhancement Strategy

Minister Cheema highlighted that this initiative builds upon recent additions to the state's transport system. "We recently added 250 buses under the Kilometre Scheme," Cheema stated, "and this program was specifically designed to benefit Punjab residents by creating maximum employment opportunities within our state."

The Kilometre Scheme represents an innovative approach to public transport management. Under this program, private individuals who own buses are granted the freedom to have their vehicles fabricated according to their personal preferences, provided they strictly comply with all government standards and safety regulations. This unique model combines private enterprise with public service requirements.

PRTC Fleet Expansion Details

The PRTC expansion represents a comprehensive approach to upgrading regional transport infrastructure. "To achieve our complete target of 659 buses for PRTC, we are implementing multiple procurement strategies," Cheema explained.

The transport department is currently conducting an active tender process to procure:

  • 309 standard buses
  • 100 midi buses

These additions will complement the buses already added under the Kilometre Scheme, ensuring a well-rounded enhancement of the PRTC fleet that serves various regional transportation needs.

PUNBUS Fleet Modernization Plan

The PUNBUS expansion plan demonstrates the government's commitment to both immediate needs and long-term efficiency. Out of the 606 buses designated for PUNBUS:

  1. 387 buses will be directly added to the general PUNBUS fleet to immediately address growing demand for public transit across various routes
  2. The remaining additions will be executed under the Kilometre Scheme to further boost operational efficiency and route coverage

"This specific phase includes the induction of 19 Volvo buses and 100 HVAC buses," Cheema emphasized, "ensuring comfortable travel options for passengers who deserve quality transportation services."

The expansion will be completed with the addition of 100 ordinary buses under the Kilometre Scheme, bringing the total new PUNBUS vehicles to 606. This diversified approach ensures that different passenger needs are met with appropriate vehicle types.

Strategic Impact on Punjab's Transportation

This massive fleet expansion represents one of the most significant public transport investments in Punjab's recent history. The combined addition of 1,265 buses across both PRTC and PUNBUS will:

  • Substantially increase route coverage across the state
  • Improve frequency and reliability of public transportation
  • Create numerous employment opportunities through the Kilometre Scheme
  • Enhance passenger comfort with modern vehicles including Volvo and HVAC buses
  • Address growing demand for efficient public transit options

The government's multi-pronged approach—combining direct procurement with the innovative Kilometre Scheme—demonstrates a comprehensive strategy for modernizing Punjab's public transportation infrastructure while supporting local employment and economic development.
