Punjab to Implement SC Orders on Stray Dogs: CM

Chandigarh: Citing a growing concern over stray dog attacks across Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced on Friday that the state government will implement the Supreme Court's directions on stray dogs in true letter and spirit, balancing public safety with humane care for animals.

Key Measures Announced

Mann stated that an adequate number of dog shelters will be created, and legally permissible measures, including euthanasia, will be taken for rabid, incurably ill, or demonstrably dangerous and aggressive dogs.

Public Safety Priority

Emphasizing that children, senior citizens, and families must be able to move freely in public spaces without fear, Mann announced the relocation of stray dogs from high-footfall areas. Adequate shelters will be established and maintained for their proper care, reaffirming the government's commitment to both human lives and animal welfare.

Supreme Court Compliance

Referring to the apex court's directions issued on May 19, Mann said necessary instructions have already been issued to ensure strict compliance across the state. Stray dogs will be removed from all high-footfall public spaces so that children, senior citizens, and families can move freely without safety concerns.

Humane and Legal Approach

Mann affirmed that the government is committed to addressing the issue humanely and legally while safeguarding public safety. Legally permissible measures, including euthanasia, will be enforced strictly in accordance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules for rabid, incurably ill, or dangerous dogs posing a threat to human life.

Relief for Citizens

Mann noted that the move will provide major relief to people across Punjab, as the stray dog menace has become a grave threat to human life. Incidents of stray dog attacks have caused widespread concern, necessitating decisive action.
