Rajasthan Announces Free Bus Travel for Women on International Women's Day

In a significant move to celebrate International Women's Day, the state of Rajasthan has announced that women and girls will be able to travel free of cost on buses across the state on March 8. This initiative is designed to honor and empower women, providing them with unrestricted mobility for a full day.

Scope of the Free Travel Facility

The free travel benefit will be available on buses operated by two key transport authorities: the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) and Jaipur City Transport Services Limited (JCTSL). According to officials, this facility will be in effect for exactly 24 hours, starting from 12:00 AM and concluding at 11:59 PM on March 8.

For Jaipur specifically, all city and suburban bus services under JCTSL will allow women passengers to travel without paying any fare. To facilitate this, conductors will issue free tickets using electronic ticket machines (ETIM). In instances where technical issues arise, traditional ticket books will be utilized as a backup to ensure seamless service.

Conditions and Limitations

While the initiative is broad, there are important conditions to note. RSRTC has extended the free travel benefit to its ordinary and express bus services. However, this benefit is strictly limited to travel within Rajasthan's state boundaries. If a bus route extends into another state, the free journey will only be applicable up to the Rajasthan border, beyond which regular fares will apply.

Additionally, the RSRTC administration has clarified that the free travel facility will not be available on certain premium bus categories. Specifically, women traveling on AC buses, Volvo buses, or buses with all-India permits will be required to pay the regular fare. This exclusion is intended to maintain revenue streams for these specialized services while still offering substantial benefits on standard routes.

Impact and Significance

This initiative underscores Rajasthan's commitment to promoting gender equality and women's empowerment through practical measures. By removing financial barriers to public transport, the state aims to encourage more women to utilize bus services, potentially increasing their participation in social, economic, and educational activities. The move is expected to benefit thousands of women and girls across urban and rural areas, fostering a sense of inclusion and support on International Women's Day.

Officials have emphasized that the program is a one-day event, but it highlights ongoing efforts to enhance women's access to public resources. As March 8 approaches, transport authorities are preparing to implement the scheme efficiently, ensuring that all eligible passengers can avail themselves of this opportunity without hassle.
