Rajasthan Government Directs Swift PNG Adoption in State Kitchens
In a significant move to enhance fuel security and energy stability, the Rajasthan government has issued a directive requiring all state hospitals and medical colleges to obtain piped natural gas (PNG) connections for their kitchens within a strict two-week deadline. This initiative is part of a broader statewide effort to expand PNG usage across government institutions, aligning with recent central directives aimed at promoting cleaner and more efficient energy sources.
Health and Medical Education Departments to Facilitate Compliance
The health and medical education departments have been tasked with facilitating applications and ensuring full compliance within the specified timeframe. A senior health department official emphasized, "The move is aimed at improving fuel security and ensuring more stable energy access for public facilities." This proactive step is expected to streamline energy management and reduce dependency on traditional fuels.
Cost and Nutritional Benefits of PNG Over LPG
PNG is being promoted as a cost-effective alternative to LPG, with estimates suggesting it is 7% to 17% cheaper. Consumers benefit from paying only for the quantity used, eliminating the upfront cost of full cylinders. Additionally, officials highlight that food cooked on PNG retains better nutritional value due to its lower heat intensity, which helps preserve essential nutrients. Existing LPG stoves can be easily converted for PNG use at a nominal cost, making the transition both economical and practical.
Expansive Scope of the Directive
The directive extends far beyond hospitals and medical colleges, encompassing a wide range of government facilities. This includes:
- Kitchens in government residential facilities, bungalows, and quarters
- Circuit houses and guest houses
- Schools preparing mid-day meals
- Hostels in universities, medical and engineering colleges, ITIs, polytechnics, and other educational institutions
- Hostels and schools run by the school education and sports departments
- Standalone hostels, training institutions, police messes, jails, Annapurna kitchens, and any other government-run canteen or kitchen
Implementation Strategy and Oversight
To ensure swift implementation, district collectors have been instructed to hold meetings with district-level officers from departments currently using LPG for cooking, along with local City Gas Distribution officials. These meetings are to result in a time-bound micro-plan for the transition. Collectors must also appoint a senior officer as a nodal officer to conduct weekly review meetings and submit weekly progress reports to the office of the additional chief secretary, mines and petroleum.
Fast-Tracking Permissions for Infrastructure
The government has further directed all relevant departments to fast-track permissions for digging and laying pipelines, removing bureaucratic hurdles that could delay the process. This comprehensive approach underscores the state's commitment to achieving energy efficiency and sustainability across its public infrastructure.
