Rajkot RMC Demolishes 1,489 Illegal Structures, Recovers Rs 350 Crore Land

Rajkot Municipal Corporation Launches Massive Anti-Encroachment Operation

In one of the most significant urban clearance initiatives witnessed in recent years, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) executed a sweeping anti-encroachment drive on February 23 and 24. The operation resulted in the demolition of a staggering 1,489 illegal structures, successfully reclaiming approximately 88,750 square meters of prime urban land. The recovered territory is estimated to be worth an impressive Rs 350 crore, marking a pivotal moment for the city's urban planning and environmental conservation efforts.

Strategic Clearance of Critical Urban Zones

The demolition campaign targeted two crucial areas that had been severely compromised by unauthorized constructions. Firstly, the operation cleared 33,750 square meters of land, involving 497 structures, along the vital 15-meter Town Planning (T.P.) Road stretching from Bapunagar to Nadodanagar. This thoroughfare is essential for urban connectivity and emergency services access.

Secondly, and perhaps more critically, the drive liberated 55,000 square meters of the ecologically sensitive Aji riverbank, where 992 illegal constructions were razed. The Aji river area has long been a focal point for environmental concerns and flood management strategies. Authorities have confirmed that debris removal operations are currently in progress across both cleared zones to restore the land for public use and environmental protection.

Unprecedented Scale and Coordination

Municipal Commissioner Tushar Sumera and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Hetal Patel addressed the media on Wednesday, detailing the monumental scale of the operation. The drive mobilized an extensive force of 1,512 personnel from various civic and security departments, supported by 261 heavy machinery units including bulldozers and excavators.

The collective effort logged over 33,000 man-hours of work, with the Rajkot City Police providing comprehensive security throughout the two-day operation to ensure it proceeded without incident. This level of coordination between municipal and law enforcement agencies underscores the operation's importance and the administration's commitment to urban governance.

Public Safety and Disaster Management Imperatives

Officials emphasized that the demolition was not merely an administrative exercise but a crucial intervention for public safety and disaster management. The Jungleshwar site, where numerous structures were removed, is notoriously flood-prone. During the 2024 monsoon season, the Aji Dam overflowed catastrophically, necessitating the evacuation of more than 1,378 residents and requiring intervention from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

By clearing these encroachments, authorities aim to mitigate such risks and enhance the city's resilience to natural disasters. Furthermore, freeing the 15-meter Town Planning Road will ensure that critical emergency vehicles—including ambulances and fire brigades—have unobstructed access to the area, potentially saving lives during crises.

Legal Compliance and Property Valuation

The RMC confirmed that all legal protocols were meticulously followed throughout the process. Encroachers received repeated warnings and formal notices well in advance of the demolition orders. This procedural diligence highlights the administration's adherence to due process while addressing long-standing violations.

Interestingly, many of the demolished properties were of substantial value, reflecting the scale of unauthorized development. The clearance included:

  • Approximately 200 modern residential houses
  • Over 750 properties valued at more than Rs 5 lakh each
  • Nearly 250 homes with estimated values ranging between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 20 lakh

Rehabilitation Measures for Affected Residents

In parallel with the demolition drive, the municipal corporation has initiated rehabilitation efforts for displaced residents. From the Jungleshwar area specifically, 873 homes have already been allotted to affected families. These allocations are part of a broader pool of 37,000 housing units constructed by the RMC to address urban housing needs while ensuring lawful settlement patterns.

This balanced approach—combining strict enforcement against encroachments with supportive rehabilitation—demonstrates a holistic strategy toward urban development and social welfare in Rajkot.
