Ranchi Anti-Narcotics Drive at Panchayat Level to Curb Opium

The district administration of Ranchi, in collaboration with mukhiyas, pradhans, and social workers across its jurisdiction, is set to launch an anti-narcotics drive at the panchayat level aimed at curbing opium cultivation. This initiative was announced following a meeting of the district NCORD Committee (Narcotics Control Coordination) chaired by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Manjunath Bhajantri on Thursday.

Strict Actions Against Drug Smuggling

During the meeting, DC Bhajantri directed officials to take stringent measures against the smuggling, production, and misuse of narcotic substances. Discussions focused on formulating and strictly implementing a coordinated strategy to address the issue effectively. “Identify drug hotspots across all police station areas and intensify special surveillance in those regions. Expedite the process of seizing assets of drug smugglers and completely dismantle their networks,” Bhajantri instructed.

Ban on Prohibited Drugs

The DC emphasized the need to inspect medical shops, pharmacies, chemical outlets, and pharmaceutical stores, enforcing a complete ban on the sale of prohibited drugs. He also stressed strengthening check-posts in border areas and along transportation routes. “Establish coordination with neighboring districts to curb inter-state drug trafficking,” he added.

Surveillance on Opium Cultivators

Bhajantri instructed officials to identify individuals involved in opium cultivation and keep them under surveillance to prevent them from reverting to opium farming. Additionally, a strict vigil should be maintained on those involved in selling drugs, with stringent action to be taken against them.

Collective Responsibility for a Drug-Free District

“Protecting our future generation from the menace of narcotics is a collective responsibility that rests upon all of us. The administration, the police, and all departments concerned will work in complete coordination to achieve the goal of making Ranchi a drug-free district,” said Bhajantri. He appealed to citizens to immediately inform the district control room, police control room, or local police station about any information regarding trafficking, sale, or misuse of narcotics. “You can also provide this information anonymously by calling the Narcotics Prohibition Information Centre toll-free number, 1933,” he added.

Action Against Illegal De-Addiction Centres

Officials were also directed to take action against de-addiction centers operating illegally in the district. The campaign will be implemented with support from the Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society.
