A 1.5-kilometer-long retaining wall is set to be constructed along the Irai riverbank in Chandrapur city, aiming to protect low-lying localities from recurring monsoon flooding. The initiative comes after years of persistent demands from residents of Rahmat Nagar, a densely populated area frequently threatened by floodwaters during heavy rains.
Background and Demand
Residents of Rahmat Nagar have long faced the menace of river erosion and rising water levels, which pose significant risks to life and property. Their repeated appeals for a permanent solution gained traction when AIMIM corporator Azhar Sheikh took up the matter with former minister and MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar. Sheikh coordinated with local residents to press for action, leading to a ground inspection of the vulnerable river stretch from Ram Setu to Chaurala Bridge.
Inspection and Directives
During the inspection, Mungantiwar was accompanied by civic officials and engineers. He directed the authorities to prepare a detailed estimate for the project immediately and finalize the alignment and scope of the proposed wall in consultation with department engineers. Additionally, he instructed officials to include earth-filling work in vulnerable pockets and develop a comprehensive proposal through the Disaster Management Department. Mungantiwar assured that the required funds for the cement concrete protection wall and allied flood-control works would be made available once the proposal is finalized.
Present Officials
Mayor Sangeeta Khandekar, Deputy Mayor Prashant Danav, Standing Committee Chairperson Mansvi Gire, corporators Rahul Pawde, Azhar Sheikh, Ravi Lonkar, and Prajwalant Kadu, along with local residents, were present during the inspection. The proposed retaining wall is expected to serve as a long-term flood mitigation measure for the city-side riverbank areas.
