The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has initiated a pre-monsoon drive across the city to address the persistent issue of waterlogging, particularly near educational institutions. This special campaign aims to protect students, teachers, and commuters from the hazards of water accumulation during the rainy season.
Scope of the Drive
Under this initiative, a comprehensive desilting and cleaning operation will be conducted on all drains within a 500-metre radius of approach roads to every school and college. The objective is to ensure an uninterrupted drainage network and prevent waterlogging near campus gates when the rains arrive.
Dedicated Teams for Implementation
To guarantee effective execution and round-the-clock monitoring, Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Kumar has formed four dedicated teams, one for each municipal zone. These teams are tasked with surveying all educational institutions in their jurisdictions and overseeing the immediate clearance of clogged drains and accumulated silt.
Kumar stated, “An initial survey was done to identify all the spots. The teams have been asked to re-verify them. Work has started and we have asked the teams to ensure its completion before monsoon hits.”
Waste Disposal and Sanitation Measures
To avoid inconvenience, the civic body has mandated that silt extracted from drains must be transported away by the next day. Additionally, sanitation workers have been instructed to spray bleaching powder at cleaned sites to prevent vector-borne diseases and infections.
Infrastructure Repairs
Infrastructure repair is also part of the drive. RMC has ordered that any concrete slabs removed during desilting must be reinstalled immediately. In areas where drainage slabs are broken or missing, new ones are to be laid on a priority basis before the monsoon. To mitigate resource constraints, a fleet of heavy machinery, including super suckers, excavators, and specialised desilting machines, is being deployed.
“The school-centric drive is a critical component of the broader preparedness plan to provide students with a safe, hygienic, and hassle-free commute during the monsoon,” Kumar added.
