Cloud Seeding Proposal for North Karnataka
Former minister and Gadag MLA H K Patil, along with Satish Jarkiholi, has called on the Karnataka government to implement cloud seeding across North Karnataka. The proposal aims to mitigate the persistent drought conditions in the region, which have severely impacted agriculture and water availability.
Urgent Need for Action
Patil emphasized the critical situation, stating that North Karnataka has been facing consecutive years of deficient rainfall. He urged the government to act swiftly to ensure cloud seeding operations begin before the monsoon season ends. According to Patil, cloud seeding can enhance rainfall by up to 15-20%, providing much-needed relief to farmers.
Support from Satish Jarkiholi
Satish Jarkiholi, a prominent leader from the region, echoed Patil's concerns. He highlighted that the state has previously experimented with cloud seeding in 2017 and 2019, yielding positive results. Jarkiholi stressed that the government should allocate necessary funds and resources to revive the initiative.
Impact on Agriculture and Water Resources
The persistent drought has led to crop failures and depleted reservoirs in districts like Gadag, Dharwad, and Belagavi. Farmers are struggling to sustain their livelihoods, and drinking water shortages have become acute. Cloud seeding is seen as a cost-effective solution to boost rainfall and recharge groundwater levels.
Government Response Awaited
The Karnataka government has yet to officially respond to the demand. However, sources indicate that the water resources department is evaluating the feasibility of cloud seeding. A decision is expected in the coming weeks, as the state braces for another potential drought year.
