Surat District Administration Permits Commercial LPG Use for Essential Services Amid Gulf Conflict Shortage

In response to a critical shortage of LPG supply triggered by escalating conflicts in the Gulf region, the Surat district administration has taken decisive action to ensure continuity of essential services. Authorities have granted permission for institutions providing vital services—including schools and hospitals—to utilize commercial cooking gas cylinders.

Emergency Measures for Essential Operations

On Saturday, at least fifteen organizations received official approval to switch to commercial LPG cylinders. District officials confirmed that additional applications are currently under rigorous scrutiny, with more approvals expected for institutions meeting established criteria.

An official from the district supply office (DSO) emphasized that this emergency measure aims to prevent disruptions to food services and other critical operations at educational institutions and healthcare facilities. "Our primary concern is maintaining uninterrupted essential services during this supply crisis," the official stated.

Accelerating PNG Connections and Network Expansion

In parallel with the commercial cylinder authorization, the district collector has issued directives to Gujarat Gas to expedite pending piped natural gas (PNG) connections wherever the network infrastructure exists. Gas companies have received instructions to:

  • Process connection applications with maximum efficiency
  • Expand PNG networks where technically feasible
  • Minimize bureaucratic delays in implementation

Comprehensive Inspections for Black Marketing Prevention

Meanwhile, a special team from the state supply department in Gandhinagar conducted extensive inspections across Surat following reports of potential black marketing of cooking gas. The inspection team executed surprise checks at numerous LPG agencies throughout both urban and rural areas of the district.

During these inspections, officials examined:

  1. Cylinder stock levels and storage conditions
  2. Distribution registers and booking records
  3. Detailed customer supply documentation
  4. Potential misuse of domestic cylinders for commercial purposes

Inspection Findings and Ongoing Monitoring

Authorities reported that inspections covered more than fifty gas agencies, with no clear evidence of black marketing or significant irregularities discovered during the inquiry. Agency records were found to be largely compliant with regulations.

However, officials cautioned that monitoring will continue indefinitely, with further surprise inspections possible to ensure compliance and prevent potential exploitation of the supply shortage.

On Friday, additional coordinated checks were conducted by teams from both the DSO and the city police's special operations group at an LPG distributor and warehouse, where stock and documentation underwent thorough examination.

The comprehensive approach—combining emergency permissions for essential services with rigorous anti-black marketing measures—reflects the administration's multi-pronged strategy to manage the LPG supply crisis while maintaining essential community services.
