Sushant Lok-1 Residents in Gurgaon Endure Severe Civic Neglect
In Gurgaon, the upscale colony of Sushant Lok-1 is facing a deepening civic crisis, with residents reporting escalating problems related to garbage accumulation, recurring sewer overflows, and severely damaged roads. Despite repeated assurances from the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), tangible improvements remain elusive, leaving the community frustrated and disillusioned.
Mounting Garbage and Environmental Hazards
Across various pockets of Sushant Lok-1, garbage, horticultural waste, and construction debris have piled up, creating unsightly and unhygienic conditions. Illegal dumping near residential houses and green belts has exacerbated the situation, posing significant health risks. Residents have highlighted irregular garbage collection services and a glaring lack of monitoring by authorities, which allows the problem to persist unchecked.
Compounding the issue is anger over user charges. Many households point out that MCG has begun levying annual garbage collection fees alongside property tax, yet they continue to pay private collectors approximately Rs 120 per month for waste removal. This dual payment system has sparked outrage, with residents questioning the value for money and accountability of municipal services.
Persistent Sewer and Road Infrastructure Failures
Sewer overflows have plagued Sushant Lok-1 for the past 4-5 years, with no resolution in sight. Deepak Verma, the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) president, revealed that while MCG has approved and tendered a sewer upgrade near Paras Hospital, work has not commenced even after three to four months. He attributed the worsening situation to unchecked illegal constructions, which place additional strain on the already outdated and inadequate infrastructure.
Similarly, internal roads in the colony, particularly at key entry points, remain in a dilapidated state. Verma noted that tenders and work orders for repairs have been issued on paper, but actual construction has not materialized, leaving residents to navigate hazardous and uneven surfaces daily.
Broader Civic Challenges and Resident Outcry
Beyond garbage and infrastructure, Sushant Lok-1 faces other pressing issues. Stray cattle and monkeys menace the area, creating safety concerns. Seasonal challenges include water crises every summer and street flooding during the monsoon, further disrupting daily life. Vanita Pasricha, a resident, emphasized the need for MCG to hold contractors accountable and ensure timely action on these fronts.
An MCG official responded by stating that work for recarpeting roads in Sushant Lok-1 has been allotted and will commence soon. Additionally, the sewer line upgradation near Paras Hospital has been assigned, and a proposal for engaging an agency to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the colony is in the works. However, residents remain skeptical, citing a history of delays and unfulfilled promises.
The ongoing neglect in Sushant Lok-1 underscores broader civic governance issues in Gurgaon, highlighting the urgent need for effective implementation and transparency in municipal projects to restore resident trust and improve quality of life.
