The Trivandrum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TCCI) has expressed serious concerns regarding the persistent issue of abandoned police custody, accident, and scrap vehicles left unattended in front of police stations across Thiruvananthapuram. In a formal representation submitted to the state government, the chamber called for time-bound action to clear these vehicles, which have been a long-standing problem affecting the city's visual appeal and public safety.
Impact on Urban Aesthetics
TCCI highlighted that these vehicles, often dumped in open public spaces, are significantly harming the city's urban aesthetics. The presence of such vehicles creates a negative impression, especially in areas near key public institutions and popular tourist destinations. The chamber emphasized that the unsightly condition of these abandoned vehicles detracts from the overall beauty of the capital city.
Risks and Hazards
Beyond visual concerns, the chamber pointed out multiple risks associated with these abandoned vehicles. They obstruct roads and footpaths, leading to traffic congestion and inconvenience for pedestrians. Additionally, they pose public safety hazards, as they can become hiding spots for antisocial elements or cause accidents. Environmental and health issues also arise from these vehicles, which may leak hazardous fluids or become breeding grounds for pests.
Government Response
Following TCCI's submission, the government referred the matter to the city police commissioner. The commissioner then directed the assistant commissioner of police of the District Crime Records Bureau (DCRB) to examine the issue and initiate necessary action. According to TCCI, the assistant commissioner's office has confirmed that steps have been initiated to clear and remove such vehicles.
Follow-Up Measures
TCCI submitted a detailed follow-up statement suggesting measures such as relocating these vehicles to designated storage areas in line with legal provisions. The police authorities have since informed that the issue has been reviewed at the field level, and further action is in progress. While welcoming the prompt response, TCCI stressed the need for a structured and time-bound implementation plan to ensure a permanent solution to the problem.
