Thane Municipal Corporation Enforces Strict Water Conservation Measures
In response to a severe water shortage exacerbated by intense summer heat, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has implemented a ban on vehicle washing and cleaning activities at service centres across the city. This prohibition, effective until June 10, aims to conserve rapidly depleting water reserves as reservoir levels fall and borewell water tables drop sharply.
Official Announcement and Legal Implications
Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar and Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao announced the decision on Tuesday, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Rao stated, "As an immediate conservation measure, washing of two-wheelers, autorickshaws, and four-wheelers at service centres has been prohibited. Violators will face action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act." This move underscores TMC's commitment to addressing the water crisis through regulatory enforcement.
Additional Water Cut for Maintenance
In a related development, TMC has scheduled a 24-hour water cut starting at 12 pm on April 23. This shutdown will affect several parts of the city, including:
- Mumbra
- Diva
- Kalwa
- Parts of Majiwada-Manpada
- Areas under the Wagle ward committee
Officials explained that the cut is necessary to facilitate urgent maintenance and pipeline upgrades under the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation water supply scheme. They assured residents that water supply will resume at low pressure for a few days after restoration, advising them to store adequate water in advance and use it judiciously during the disruption.
Broader Context and Public Response
The combination of the vehicle washing ban and scheduled water cut reflects TMC's proactive approach to managing water resources during the summer months. With temperatures rising and water reserves dwindling, these measures are critical to prevent further shortages. Residents are urged to cooperate with the restrictions and adopt water-saving practices to mitigate the impact of the crisis.
