Trichy Highway Barricades Fail to Curb Accidents, Spark Public Outcry

Barricades erected by the Trichy city police along two major national highways passing through the city have transformed into a significant public hazard, with commuters and residents alleging that accident risks have substantially increased rather than decreased. With three fatal accidents and several non-fatal crashes reported in recent months on the Trichy–Pudukottai and Trichy–Madurai highway stretches, road users assert that these barricades have completely failed to serve their intended purpose of improving overall road safety.

Trichy-Pudukottai NH: A 3-Kilometer Stretch of Peril

The Trichy-Pudukottai National Highway between the TVS tollgate and Trichy International Airport features a staggering 23 median openings within just a 3-kilometer stretch, of which three openings are temporarily closed. Following two fatal accidents on this stretch in January and February, police installed approximately 50 barricades near the median openings to restrict vehicles from crossing the highway indiscriminately.

However, local residents and daily commuters claim that these barricades have failed to effectively reduce the speed of vehicles, especially those proceeding rapidly toward the airport. "Vehicles stumble upon barricades only at the very last minute, creating sudden and dangerous stops. Trailing vehicles often ram into vehicles that make these abrupt halts near the barricade, escalating collision risks," explained R Thiruvenkadam, a prominent road safety activist based in Trichy.

Thiruvenkadam further emphasized that alternative measures could prove more effective: "Installing proper blinkers and enforcing strict penalisation for over-speeding would make this road significantly safer. Many of the existing barricades are already dilapidated, and during nighttime, commuters cannot see them clearly, compounding the danger." Activists have suggested that police should permanently close some median openings that pose high accident risks due to frequent and unsafe U-turns.

Trichy-Madurai NH: Similar Safety Lapses at KK Nagar

Parallel problems persist on the Trichy-Madurai National Highway near the KK Nagar entry point. Barricades placed by police to reduce the speed of city buses heading to Panjapur KKBT are not aiding residents in crossing the highway safely. Accident threats continue unabated even after a tragic incident in December where a two-wheeler rider was killed when a speeding bus struck him.

Compounding the issue, two police checkposts at the KK Nagar junction are frequently unmanned, leaving no authority to monitor traffic or enforce regulations. "We will examine the spot thoroughly and initiate appropriate corrective measures to address these concerns," assured a senior city police officer when questioned about the ongoing hazards.

Proposed Solutions and Implementation Hurdles

Sources from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) revealed that they were formally requested by the Trichy city police to install speed breakers instead of barricades near critical junctions like Mannarpuram and KK Nagar. However, this proposal faces significant obstacles. Speed breakers are considered unlikely to be approved because the airport road is designated as a VVIP movement-prone area, where such infrastructure could disrupt smooth transit for official convoys.

This bureaucratic and logistical impasse leaves residents in a precarious situation, with temporary barricades proving ineffective and permanent solutions stalled by procedural constraints.

Recent Fatal Accidents Highlight Urgent Need for Action

  • December 8: A 56-year-old man riding a two-wheeler was killed by a private bus near KK Nagar junction.
  • January 18: A 44-year-old woman riding pillion on a motorcycle was killed by a car near Trichy International Airport.
  • February 13: A retired police Sub-Inspector lost his life after his bike collided with a stray cow near Kottapattu.

Barricades of Troubles: Key Statistics

  1. Route: From TVS tollgate to Trichy International Airport
  2. Length: 3 kilometers
  3. Median Openings: 23
  4. Temporarily Closed Openings: 3
  5. Barricades Installed: 50+

The ongoing safety crisis on Trichy's national highways underscores a critical need for comprehensive traffic management reforms. As accidents mount and public frustration grows, authorities face mounting pressure to implement sustainable solutions that genuinely protect commuters rather than inadvertently endangering them.
