Trichy Corporation and Architects Launch National Design Competition for Teppakulam Redevelopment
The Trichy Corporation, in collaboration with city-based architects, has officially launched a groundbreaking national-level design competition titled 'Reimagining Teppakulam'. This ambitious initiative aims to solicit innovative ideas from architects and urban planners across India to develop a sustainable and vibrant public space in the heart of Trichy.
Comprehensive Land-Use Design for 30-Acre Area
Organized by Archtrust, Trichy, and the Indian Institute of Architects, Trichy centre, the competition will focus on creating a comprehensive land-use design for redeveloping approximately 30 acres of commercialized area surrounding the historic Teppakulam tank. The primary theme emphasizes transforming the tank into a multifunctional climate infrastructure and cultural landscape, effectively bridging the gap between its rich heritage value and everyday public use.
Registration and Submission Details
Online registrations are currently open at the official competition website, with architects required to register before the deadline of May 1. Registrations are accepted under two distinct categories: professionals and students. All registered contestants will receive detailed design kits to guide their submissions.
Participants must submit their innovative design ideas by May 31. A distinguished jury of experts will meticulously scrutinize and select the best models by June 14. An exhibition showcasing the top ideas is also planned to highlight the creative proposals.
From Concept to Implementation
S Vijayakumar, Chairman of Archtrust, Trichy, emphasized that the top-selected models will advance to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage. With the active support of the Trichy Corporation, the most viable and sustainable design will be implemented to transform the Teppakulam tank and the adjacent Main Guard Gate area. This area has recently been retrieved from encroachments, paving the way for this transformative redevelopment project.
The competition represents a significant step towards urban renewal, aiming to enhance public spaces while addressing climate resilience and cultural preservation in Trichy.
