Uttar Pradesh Forest Department Unveils Comprehensive Plan to Tackle Monkey Menace

In response to a high court order, the Uttar Pradesh forest department has formulated an interim action plan designed to control the escalating monkey menace in villages throughout the state. The government release outlines a multi-faceted strategy that incorporates immediate, preventive, and long-term measures to mitigate human-monkey conflicts effectively.

Immediate Action Steps to Address Conflict

The immediate measures are focused on rapid response and coordination. Within one month, authorities will identify conflict-prone areas in municipal corporations, municipal councils, and nagar panchayats. This will be accompanied by an assessment of the monkey populations responsible for these conflicts.

To streamline reporting, nodal officers will be designated to receive information on conflict incidents. Helpline numbers will be issued and publicized widely to ensure accessibility. Additionally, the department will identify and register individuals or organizations with the necessary expertise to capture monkeys safely and efficiently.

Preventive Strategies for Sustainable Coexistence

Preventive measures aim to reduce conflicts through community engagement and environmental management. Public awareness programs and outreach initiatives will be conducted to educate residents on safe practices.

Effective waste management systems will be implemented to deter monkeys from entering populated areas in search of food. In a nod to religious sentiments, specific areas will be designated where individuals can feed monkeys without causing disturbances.

Planting fruit-bearing trees in designated zones is also part of the plan to provide natural food sources and reduce human-monkey interactions.

Long-Term Vision for Population Control and Sanctuary

Long-term measures will focus on sustainable solutions. Technical reports will be implemented to limit monkey population growth through humane methods. Captured monkeys will be provided lifelong sanctuary in secure facilities.

Areas severely affected by conflict will be identified for targeted interventions. Priority will be given to releasing captured monkeys into forest areas, as stated in the official release.

Implementation and Oversight

The action plan directs local bodies to prioritize waste management within their jurisdictions and organize targeted awareness campaigns across all affected regions. Instructions have been issued to all divisional forest officers (DFOs) and divisional directors to ensure the measures are implemented effectively across Uttar Pradesh.

This comprehensive approach underscores the state's commitment to addressing wildlife conflicts while balancing ecological and community needs.
