Lucknow: In response to the India Meteorological Department's forecast of a below-normal monsoon and irregular rainfall in 2026 due to the El Niño effect, the Uttar Pradesh state government has initiated the direct seeded rice (DSR) technique for paddy cultivation during the Kharif season. This technique saves 15% to 20% of water and allows the crop to mature 15 to 20 days earlier, thereby providing ample time for the subsequent Rabi crop, according to UP agriculture department officials on Saturday.
Kharif Campaign 2026 Launched with Climate-Adaptive Strategy
The department launched the Kharif Campaign 2026 with a specialized strategy, taking into account the challenges posed by climate change and a potentially weak monsoon. The state government's primary objective is to encourage farmers to adopt weather-based agricultural techniques, water conservation measures, and farming practices focused on pulses and oilseeds. The aim is to set new benchmarks in food grain production even under adverse conditions.
Production Targets and Techniques
The state government has set a target of increasing Kharif crops and oilseed production to nearly 30.25 million tonnes, which would be an increase of almost 20% from last year's production of 25.65 million tonnes. Additional Director of Agriculture, A K Pathak, told TOI that the increased production would be based on techniques that envisage higher productivity and an enhanced acreage in the upcoming season.
Preparations for the Kharif Season
Officials stated that the agriculture department is ensuring the timely provision of certified seeds, fertilizers, and technical training to farmers. Through the organization of farmers' seminars extending down to the Gram Panchayat level, farmers are being provided with information on drought management, crop diversification, and soil conservation. The department emphasized that under the Central Government's 'Khet Bachao' (Save the Farm) campaign, farmers are being advised to use fertilizers strictly based on soil test results.
Support for Pulses, Oilseeds, and Millets
To make the state self-reliant in the production of pulses, oilseeds, and millets, farmers will be provided with free mini-kits and subsidized seeds in a timely manner. The government currently holds an adequate stock of improved seeds, fertilizers, and agro-chemicals. Farmers are urged to avail themselves of these facilities and adopt innovative technologies to enhance their crop productivity and achieve economic empowerment, officials added.
