UP Highway and Expressway Toll Charges See Annual Hike, Some Routes Unchanged
Commuting on high-speed corridors in Uttar Pradesh is set to become slightly more expensive for vehicle owners. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) released revised toll figures on Thursday, announcing a marginal increase in charges across the state's network of national highways and expressways.
Revised Toll Rates for Key Expressways
While commuting on national highways will become costlier by a maximum of 10% for passenger car owners, the expressways authority in UP has implemented toll hikes ranging from 1.50% to 3.50%. For instance, car and SUV owners traveling via the Lucknow-Agra Expressway will now have to pay Rs 675 instead of Rs 665 per trip. Similarly, two-wheeler riders on this route will need to spend Rs 335 instead of Rs 330 for a single journey.
User charges have also been increased for vehicles using the Gorakhpur Link Expressway. Four-wheeler owners will now pay Rs 295, up by Rs 10, while two-wheeler riders will be charged Rs 145, an increase of Rs 5. However, the most significant hikes will affect commercial vehicles, buses, and heavy commercial vehicles with multiple axles, though specific percentage increases for these categories were not detailed in the announcement.
Some Expressways See No Change
In a relief for regular commuters, toll rates for the Bundelkhand and Purvanchal expressways have been left unchanged this year. This means two-wheeler, car, and SUV owners using these routes will not have to pay anything extra, providing a reprieve amid the general upward trend in transportation costs.
Annual Revision Process Explained
Gautam Vishal, NHAI's UP west regional officer, clarified the rationale behind the toll adjustments. "The toll charges are revised every year on April 1 as per the rules stipulated in our act, specifically the National Highway Fee Rules of 2008," he stated. "National highway users commuting between Lucknow and neighboring districts, as well as other parts of the state, will experience an additional cost ranging from 5% to 10%."
This annual revision mechanism ensures that toll rates are adjusted systematically to account for inflation, maintenance costs, and infrastructure development. The authorities emphasize that these modest increases are necessary to sustain and improve the quality of high-speed corridors, which play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity and economic growth across Uttar Pradesh.
Vehicle owners are advised to plan their budgets accordingly, especially those who frequently use national highways and expressways for daily commutes or long-distance travel. While the hikes are described as marginal, they collectively represent an incremental rise in transportation expenses for residents and businesses relying on these vital road networks.
