UP Irrigation Wins SKOCH Award for Ganga, Bhakhra Projects

Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department Honored with Prestigious SKOCH Award for Water Management Excellence

The Uttar Pradesh irrigation department has achieved national recognition by receiving the esteemed SKOCH Award in Delhi. This accolade celebrates the department's groundbreaking and innovative water management initiatives, which are playing a pivotal role in major infrastructure projects connected to the upcoming Maha Kumbh 2025.

Groundbreaking Projects Recognized

The department was specifically honored for two transformative projects that demonstrate engineering prowess and forward-thinking planning.

Ganga Channelization for Maha Kumbh 2025: A monumental undertaking involved the channelization of the Ganga River by merging three separate streams into a single, unified channel. This complex project was executed to facilitate the grand religious gathering of Maha Kumbh.

The initiative successfully created an expansive circulation area and a strategic formation known as the 'Sangam Nose'. These developments are designed to enable smoother, safer, and more efficient movement for the millions of devotees expected to participate in the sacred event, directly enhancing the pilgrimage experience.

Automatic Gates at Bhakhra Weir: The second project lauded by the award committee is the installation of state-of-the-art automatic gates at the Bhakhra weir in Rampur. This technological upgrade represents a significant leap in water resource management for the region.

Official Statements on the Achievement

The award was formally received on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh state government by Upendra Singh, Chief Engineer of the Irrigation Department. In his remarks, Singh highlighted that the automatic gates project at Bhakhra Dam received special appreciation for its impact.

"The installation has revolutionized water distribution, making it vastly more efficient and precisely controlled," stated Chief Engineer Upendra Singh. "This contributes directly to improved irrigation capabilities, enhanced water conservation efforts, and the optimal utilization of our precious water resources."

Anil Garg, Principal Secretary of Irrigation, elaborated on the challenges and successes of the Ganga project. "Our primary objective was to channelize the Ganga's streams to facilitate 'amrit snan' (the holy bath) for the maximum possible number of devotees during Maha Kumbh," Garg explained.

"Scientifically managing the dynamic flow of a river as significant as the Ganga was an immensely challenging task. The department executed this mission successfully, which showcases the state's operational efficiency and its proven capability to manage large-scale events in a highly organized and effective manner."

Significance and Broader Impact

This national award underscores Uttar Pradesh's commitment to innovative infrastructure and sustainable water management. The recognized projects are not only crucial for the logistical success of Maha Kumbh 2025 but also set a benchmark for long-term water resource planning and technological integration in public works.

The SKOCH Award serves as a testament to the department's engineering excellence and its vital role in supporting both religious-cultural mega-events and essential agricultural and conservation needs through advanced water management solutions.
