Uttar Pradesh's Power Sector Transformation: Generation Capacity Soars, Electrification Doubles
UP Power Sector: Generation Up, Electrification Doubles in 8 Years

Uttar Pradesh Achieves Major Power Sector Milestones Under 'Roshan Pradesh' Vision

Uttar Pradesh has recorded substantial and transformative progress in fortifying its power sector over the past eight years. The state has successfully expanded its generation capacity, significantly boosted electricity supply across all regions, and nearly doubled the number of household connections. This comprehensive advancement is part of the ambitious 'Roshan Pradesh' vision, which aims to achieve reliable, inclusive, and affordable energy access for all residents.

Significant Expansion in Power Generation and Capacity

According to official data, the state's total installed power generation capacity reached an impressive 8,325 megawatts (MW) in the 2024–25 period. This marks a substantial increase from the 7,159 MW recorded in 2016–17, representing a growth of 1,166 MW in just eight years. Notably, this recent addition surpasses the capacity increase of 1,110 MW that was achieved over the entire 21-year span between 1995–96 and 2016–17, highlighting the accelerated pace of development.

Total electricity generation has also experienced a sharp rise, climbing from 3,017 crore kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2016–17 to 3,566 crore kWh in 2024–25. This addition of 548 crore kWh exceeds the growth achieved in the 16 years prior to 2017. Government officials attribute this improvement to higher operational efficiency and more effective utilization of generation assets, which have collectively enhanced the state's energy output.

Industrial Consumption Doubles, Signaling Robust Economic Growth

The significant jump in power availability has directly supported accelerated industrial activity across Uttar Pradesh. The average annual growth in industrial consumption more than doubled to 8.9 per cent between 2021–22 and 2024–25, compared to a rate of 4.1 per cent during the 2013–17 period. This surge underscores growing investor confidence, which is being bolstered by a stable and reliable power supply that facilitates business operations and expansion.

Electrification Expands Dramatically to Rural Hinterlands

Uttar Pradesh has also achieved a major leap in household and rural electrification. The number of electricity connections increased by an impressive 102 per cent, rising from 180.13 lakh in 2017 to 363.98 lakh in 2025. This translates to approximately 184 lakh new connections added over the eight-year period, bringing power to millions of previously underserved households.

Similarly, the number of electrified hamlets grew from 1.28 lakh in 2017 to 2.5 lakh by June 2025, effectively doubling rural coverage. This expansion has extended power access to many previously unserved settlements, improving quality of life and economic opportunities in remote areas.

Reduced Losses and Extended Supply Hours Enhance Reliability

Enhanced grid management and administrative reforms have led to a sharp reduction in transmission and distribution (T&D) losses. These losses decreased from 21.47 per cent in 2017 to 13.77 per cent in 2025, a decline of 7.7 percentage points that is viewed as a key indicator of improved operational efficiency and better infrastructure performance.

Power availability has improved consistently across all regions of the state. Supply hours at district headquarters have increased from 17 hours in the 2014–17 period to a full 24 hours at present. Tehsil headquarters now receive over 21 hours of power daily, while rural areas enjoy an average of 18 hours, up from just 11 hours earlier. This enhanced reliability has proven particularly beneficial for small businesses, agricultural activities, and daily life in rural households.

Energy Positioned as Core Development Enabler

State officials emphasize that these achievements underscore Uttar Pradesh's significant progress toward its 'Roshan Pradesh' target of ensuring round-the-clock, affordable, and quality power for all citizens. The sustained improvements in generation capacity, coverage expansion, and operational efficiency have firmly positioned energy as a critical enabler of the state's broader economic and industrial growth strategy. This transformation is expected to continue driving development and prosperity across Uttar Pradesh in the coming years.
