The Uttar Pradesh transport department on Friday issued comprehensive guidelines aimed at promoting fuel conservation and the use of public transportation. This initiative aligns with the recent directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who has emphasized the need to encourage public transport and conserve fuel across the state.
Key Measures Announced
Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh stated that the department has been instructed to submit a proposal regarding exemptions on road tax and registration fees for the upcoming fiscal year. These exemptions are intended to incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles (e-vehicles) and public transport vehicles, making them more affordable for operators and users alike.
Enhancing Bus Services
To reduce reliance on private cars, the minister directed an increase in the frequency of bus services during peak hours. For offices employing more than 500 staff members, special bus services will be operated through close coordination between the transport department and the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC). This measure is expected to significantly cut down the number of private vehicles on the road during rush hours.
Auditing and Curtailing Vehicle Use
The department will conduct an audit of the 'car pooling' system to ensure its effectiveness. Additionally, the allocation of surplus vehicles to officials will be revoked, and the consumption of diesel and petrol will be curtailed to the greatest extent possible. These steps are part of a broader strategy to minimize fuel usage and promote efficient transportation practices.
Energy Conservation and Biogas Model
Among other initiatives, the department will focus on conserving electricity across its offices and depots. A feasibility study of the 'Chandauli Model', which involves energy generation from biogas or cow dung, will be undertaken. Based on the findings, an action plan will be prepared for its implementation across the corporation's depots and workshops, potentially turning waste into a valuable energy resource.
Ban on Foreign Travel
In a move to cut unnecessary expenses and reduce carbon footprint, a ban has been imposed on official foreign travel by department officers for the next six months. Furthermore, 'virtual meetings' will be prioritized over physical meetings with officials stationed outside headquarters, thereby saving time, money, and fuel.
These guidelines represent a significant step towards sustainable transportation and fuel conservation in Uttar Pradesh, setting an example for other states to follow.
