In a significant boost to modern rail travel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the highly anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper train later this month. This launch marks a pivotal step in Indian Railways' mission to revolutionize long-distance overnight journeys across the country.
Route, Capacity, and Passenger-Centric Design
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the first of these modern trains will commence service on the Guwahati to Kolkata (Howrah-Kamakhya) route, seamlessly connecting eastern and northeastern India. Each fully air-conditioned train will consist of 16 coaches with a total passenger capacity of 823 berths.
The coach composition is carefully planned to cater to different budgets: eleven 3-AC coaches, four 2-AC coaches, and one 1-AC coach. This translates to 611 berths in 3-AC, 188 in 2-AC, and 24 in the premium 1-AC category.
Modern Amenities and Enhanced Safety Features
The Vande Bharat sleeper variant is engineered for superior comfort and safety. Passengers can expect ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning for restful sleep. The train incorporates advanced technology for a smoother ride, including superior suspension systems and measures to significantly reduce noise levels.
For passenger safety, the train will be equipped with the indigenous automatic train protection system, Kavach, along with an emergency talk-back system for communication during crises. A standout feature is the integrated disinfectant technology, which Railways Minister Vaishnaw confirmed eliminates 99.9% of germs, a standard already implemented in the chair-car Vande Bharat trains.
Other conveniences include automatic doors and sealed vestibules, allowing for smooth and safe movement between coaches even when the train is in motion.
Affordable Fares and Regional Cuisine On Board
Keeping the middle-class traveler in mind, the Railways has announced competitive, fixed fares for the journey. A one-way ticket on the Guwahati-Kolkata route will start at an accessible price point.
The fare for a 3-AC ticket is approximately ₹2,300, while a 2-AC ticket will cost around ₹3,000. The premium 1-AC experience is priced at about ₹3,600.
Adding a cultural touch to the journey, the onboard catering will feature regional specialties. Trains originating from Guwahati will serve Assamese cuisine, and those starting from Kolkata will offer traditional Bengali food, making the travel experience uniquely immersive.
The introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper train promises to redefine overnight rail travel in India, offering a faster, safer, and more comfortable alternative to existing mail and express trains, while remaining firmly within the reach of the common citizen.
