Varanasi Commissioner Fines Rs 25,000 for Drain Negligence

Varanasi: In a decisive action against negligence in drain cleaning, Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the executing agency, Samarth Enterprises, on Monday. The penalty was levied for gross negligence in drain cleaning operations in the Mahmoorganj area. Additionally, an adverse entry was made against Regional Junior Engineer Pankaj Patel for failing to monitor the work and for exercising negligence in his duties.

Inspection Reveals Silt Accumulation and Encroachments

During an inspection of roads on Dr. Usha Gupta Hospital Marg, Commissioner Nagpal discovered silt accumulated at the site. He immediately reprimanded the officials present for the lapse. Further inspection revealed that several shopkeepers and building owners had encroached upon the drains by constructing permanent structures over them. These structures were obstructing the cleaning work, exacerbating the drainage issues in the area.

Strict Action Initiated Against Encroachers

Taking a stern stance against such encroachments, the municipal commissioner formed special teams at the zonal level to identify all encroachers. The identified individuals were issued immediate warnings, with a clear directive to remove the encroachments. The commissioner stated that if the encroachments are not removed despite these warnings, fines will be imposed on the defaulters.
