Varanasi Mayor Sets Feb 12 Deadline to Fix Roads for Mahashivratri and Panchkroshi Yatra
Varanasi Mayor Sets Feb 12 Deadline for Road Repairs Ahead of Festivals

In preparation for the upcoming Mahashivratri festival on February 15 and the one-day Panchkroshi Yatra, Varanasi Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari has issued a strict deadline of February 12 to address critical infrastructure issues across the city. The directive focuses on eliminating potholes and plastic waste from all roads and lanes along the pilgrimage route, ensuring a safe and clean environment for the expected influx of devotees.

Executive Meeting Decision and Cleanliness Drive

The decision was made during an executive meeting, following a proposal by member Rajesh Kumar Yadav, popularly known as 'Challu'. As part of this initiative, a special cleanliness drive will be conducted along the entire Panchkroshi route within the Varanasi Municipal Corporation limits. This includes thorough cleaning at all 'padavs' or halts along the way, where pilgrims traditionally rest during their journey.

Focus on Key Shiva Temples and Infrastructure

All major routes leading to prominent Shiva temples in Varanasi, such as the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Mahamrityunjay Temple, are to be made pothole-free by the February 12 deadline. This effort aims to prevent accidents and ensure smooth access for worshippers during the festive period, which typically sees heavy crowds.

In addition to road repairs, the water works and electricity departments have been instructed to collaborate closely. Their immediate tasks include fixing faulty street lights and addressing issues of sewer overflow, which could pose hazards to pilgrims. Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal has directed the chief of water works and relevant executive engineers to conduct on-site inspections to identify and resolve these problems promptly.

Safety and Cleanliness Priorities

If any construction work is found incomplete on lanes or roads, or if paths are obstructed by sewer pipelines, repairs must be carried out immediately. This proactive approach is designed to minimize the risk of accidents and inconvenience for devotees navigating the crowded areas. Special emphasis is being placed on cleanliness arrangements this year, with a clear goal to maintain the entire pilgrimage route as 'plastic-free'.

By setting this deadline, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation aims to enhance the overall experience for participants in the Panchkroshi Yatra and Mahashivratri celebrations, reflecting the city's commitment to preserving its spiritual heritage while improving urban infrastructure.
