Visakhapatnam's 'No Bins – No Trade' Campaign Enforces Strict Waste Segregation Rules
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has rolled out a stringent new policy titled "no bins – no trade", compelling all traders and commercial establishments to adopt mandatory waste segregation practices. Under this initiative, businesses are required to use blue dustbins for dry waste and green dustbins for wet waste as a fundamental condition for their operational licenses.
Zero-Waste Institutions: A Core Goal of Swarna Andhra–Swachha Andhra
This campaign is an integral component of the broader Swarna Andhra–Swachha Andhra initiative, which aims to transform Visakhapatnam into a model of cleanliness and sustainability. GVMC officials have emphasized that every institution in the city—including government offices, private enterprises, educational facilities, hospitals, hotels, hostels, and restaurants—must evolve into "zero-waste institutions" by implementing robust waste management systems.
Additional commissioners P Nallanayya and SS Varma clarified that compliance is non-negotiable. They outlined that all establishments must not only segregate waste but also set up on-site composting units to handle organic refuse efficiently, thereby reducing landfill dependency.
City-Wide Implementation and Public Engagement
The "no bins – no trade" drive is being enforced across Visakhapatnam under the slogan "Mana Chetta – Mana Badhyata" (our waste – our responsibility). To kickstart this effort, the Swarna Andhra–Swachha Andhra programme was conducted at the RRR Centre premises in Yendada on Saturday, following guidelines set by the Swachha Andhra Corporation.
Residents have been instructed to hand over segregated waste daily to GVMC sanitation workers, ensuring that cleanliness is maintained throughout the urban landscape. This collaborative approach is designed to foster community participation and accountability.

Swachha Andhra Corporation director Nagalakshmi praised the dedication of GVMC officials and sanitation workers, highlighting their commitment to propelling Visakhapatnam to the top of national cleanliness rankings. She urged citizens to cooperate by maintaining hygiene in their surroundings and actively engaging in waste segregation efforts.
Chief medical officer Dr E N V Naresh Kumar reinforced the campaign's significance, stating that the "no bins – no trade" mandate is a key pillar of the Swarna Andhra–Swachha Andhra initiative. He emphasized that proper waste disposal systems are now obligatory for all business establishments, underscoring the municipal corporation's resolve to enhance environmental sustainability and public health.
This comprehensive drive not only aims to streamline waste management but also to instill a culture of responsibility among Visakhapatnam's residents and commercial entities, paving the way for a cleaner, greener city.
