Over 57,000 Rural Women in Uttar Pradesh Transform into Successful Sugarcane Entrepreneurs
The Uttar Pradesh government announced on Thursday that a remarkable initiative has empowered over 57,000 rural women to become successful entrepreneurs through sugarcane production. This transformative achievement stems from the Advanced Sugarcane Seed Distribution Programme, which was launched in the state during the 2020-21 period.
Widespread Impact Across Sugarcane-Growing Districts
Under this pioneering scheme, a total of 3,163 women self-help groups have been established across 37 sugarcane-growing districts in Uttar Pradesh. These groups have collectively enabled 57,322 women to gain meaningful self-employment, significantly boosting their economic independence.
To date, the programme has generated more than 4.5 lakh workdays, providing substantial livelihood opportunities in rural areas. This initiative has not only strengthened the financial conditions of these women but has also injected new momentum into the broader rural economy.
Empowering Marginalized Communities and Boosting Confidence
Sugarcane Commissioner Ministhy S highlighted that the programme has dramatically increased women's confidence and encouraged their active participation in agriculture. The spokesperson noted, "It includes 10,270 women from Scheduled Castes and 130 from Scheduled Tribes, who are now becoming self-reliant and strengthening their families' financial conditions."
So far, these women self-help groups have produced an impressive 60.73 crore sugarcane seeds. In return for their efforts, they have received subsidies exceeding Rs 77.83 crore, delivering large-scale financial benefits to rural women across the state.
Future Initiatives and Enhanced Opportunities
To further empower women, the department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rural Livelihood Mission. Under this collaboration, "Prerna Canteens" will be operated within committees, creating additional avenues for employment and income generation.
Commissioner Ministhy S added that women will also be provided with loans and other essential facilities through this partnership. These measures are expected to significantly increase employment opportunities and boost income levels for rural women, ensuring sustained economic growth and empowerment.
