AP Government Lays Foundation for Rs 26 Crore Working Women's Hostel in Visakhapatnam
In a significant move to bolster women's empowerment and security, the Union and Andhra Pradesh governments are prioritizing initiatives for working women in Visakhapatnam. Bheemili MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao emphasized this commitment during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a new working women's hostel near Madhurawada on Tuesday.
MLA and GVMC Commissioner Lead Ceremony
MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao, alongside Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Ketan Garg, officially inaugurated the project. The hostel is being developed under the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment 2024–25, executed by the Greater Visakhapatnam Smart City Corporation Limited at a cost of Rs 26.12 crore.
Comprehensive Plan for Women's Accommodation
Rao highlighted that Visakhapatnam, with its growing population of working women, requires enhanced safety measures. "To ensure their safety and welfare, three working women's hostels have been sanctioned for Visakhapatnam, with total funding of Rs 172 crore from the Centre and the state government," he stated.
The comprehensive plan includes:
- One hostel already under construction in Gajuwaka.
- Foundation work completed for another hostel at Mudasaralova.
- The new Madhurawada hostel, featuring G+4 floors with 96 rooms, accommodating 248 women.
GVMC Commissioner Details Amenities and Vision
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg confirmed that all three hostels are being constructed through the Greater Visakhapatnam Smart City Corporation. He credited Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat for his efforts in securing project approvals.
"The hostels will provide facilities such as parking, gardens, a kitchen, indoor games, a yoga hall, gym, library, medical room, warden's room, a rooftop café, and other essential amenities," Garg explained.
He further noted that as Visakhapatnam emerges as a hub for IT, education, healthcare, and other industries, these hostels will offer safe and convenient accommodation for working women, addressing critical needs in the city's development.
Broader Impact on Women's Empowerment
This initiative underscores a collaborative effort between central and state authorities to enhance women's safety and support their professional growth. By investing in infrastructure that prioritizes security and comfort, the government aims to foster an environment where women can thrive in their careers without compromising on well-being.
The project aligns with broader goals of urban development and gender equality, positioning Visakhapatnam as a model city for women's empowerment in Andhra Pradesh and beyond.
