Andhra Pradesh Government Unveils Free Electricity Initiative for Weavers
The Andhra Pradesh state government is set to implement a free electricity scheme for weavers across the state, starting from Wednesday. This move fulfills a key electoral promise aimed at supporting the traditional weaving community. Under the new policy, handloom units will receive up to 200 units of free power per month, while power loom units are entitled to 500 units monthly.
Financial Impact and Beneficiary Details
Officials estimate that the scheme will require an annual expenditure of approximately Rs 150 crore. It is projected to benefit a total of 1,04,488 families involved in the weaving sector. This includes around 93,000 families operating handlooms and 11,488 families running power looms. The initiative is designed to alleviate the cost burden of electricity, which has become a significant component of input expenses in weaving.
According to government calculations, the free power benefit will result in annual savings of about Rs 8,640 for each handloom unit and up to Rs 21,600 for each power loom unit. This financial relief is expected to help weavers sustain their livelihoods and reduce operational costs.
Broader Strategy for Handloom Revival
Handlooms Minister S Savita emphasized that the scheme is part of a comprehensive strategy to revive the handloom sector, which has faced challenges in recent years. "The decision is intended to provide financial relief and enable weavers to continue their traditional occupation on sustainable lines," she stated. Savita highlighted several other support measures implemented by the government since taking office.
- Enhancement of the monthly pension for weavers to Rs 4,000.
- Allocation of Rs 5 crore towards thrift fund support for handloom cooperative societies.
- Provision of subsidies up to 90% for the purchase of modern machinery to boost productivity.
- A 15% rebate on raw materials and steps to ensure the supply of quality yarn.
Cluster Development and Market Access
For cluster-level development, the government has sanctioned Rs 10.44 crore for small handloom clusters across Andhra Pradesh. To improve market access, the administration has facilitated partnerships with e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart. This initiative allows handloom products to be sold directly to consumers, expanding their reach and potential sales.
Savita noted that these combined efforts aim to not only provide immediate financial assistance but also foster long-term growth and sustainability in the handloom industry. The free electricity scheme is seen as a critical step in reducing operational hurdles and empowering weavers to thrive in a competitive market.
