Arunachal Pradesh Launches 'Catch Them Young' Fisheries Training for 49 Farmers

In a significant move to bolster the fisheries sector, Arunachal Pradesh has initiated the 'Catch Them Young' programme, with 49 farmers from four districts commencing intensive skill training. The launch event was presided over by Fisheries Minister Gabriel D Wangsu in Doimukh on Wednesday, marking a pivotal step towards enhancing local aquaculture.

Empowering Youth Through Technical Expertise

The programme, organized by the Department of Fisheries, is designed to equip unemployed educated youth and farmers with advanced technical skills in fish farming and allied sectors. Minister Wangsu emphasized the government's commitment to providing handholding support, including priority access to schemes like the Atma Nirbhar Scheme, to ensure sustainable livelihoods.

Addressing the participants, Wangsu highlighted the importance of skill development in preventing failures that often demotivate young farmers. "The government intends to provide technical knowledge to interested farmers. Lack of skills often leads to failure, which in turn demotivates youth," he stated, underscoring the programme's role in fostering motivation and resilience.

Training Details and Success Stories

The 49 farmers, hailing from Papum Pare, Keyi Panyor, Kra Daadi, and Kamle districts, will undergo a rigorous three-day training at the Fish Farmers’ Training Centre in Emchi, Doimukh. The curriculum includes comprehensive sessions on feed management, breeding techniques, and fish sampling, aimed at enhancing production efficiency.

To inspire the trainees, progressive fish farmers Likha Maj and Tana Hari shared their success stories, offering practical insights and encouragement. Their experiences serve as a testament to the potential of fisheries as a viable economic activity in the region.

Government's Vision and Future Prospects

Minister Wangsu expressed optimism that with adequate skills, farmers could achieve surplus fish production, contributing to food security and economic growth. "It is a small initiative but effective — for the government and for the farmers themselves," he remarked, noting that the programme reflects the sincerity and commitment of the Pema Khandu-led government.

The launch event was also attended by Fisheries Commissioner Tai Kaye and senior officials from the department, highlighting the collaborative effort to promote fisheries as a sustainable livelihood option. This initiative aligns with broader goals of reducing unemployment and boosting the state's agricultural output through innovative training programmes.
