Assam Chief Minister Announces Major Financial Boost for Women Under Orunodoi Scheme
In a significant move to bolster women empowerment, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared that nearly 40 lakh beneficiaries of the Orunodoi scheme will receive a consolidated payment of Rs 9,000 each on Tuesday. This announcement, made during a Facebook live session on Sunday, underscores the state government's commitment to enhancing financial security for women.
Record-Breaking Single-Day Transfer of Rs 3,600 Crore
Emphasizing the scale of this initiative, Sarma highlighted that the transfer will amount to a record single-day bank transfer of Rs 3,600 crore under a government scheme. "On March 10 at 10.30 am, 40 lakh Orunodoi families will receive Rs 9,000 each. In a single day, Rs 3,600 crore will be transferred to the beneficiaries. This will also be a record," he stated. The payment covers grants for four months from January, along with an additional amount allocated for Bohag Bihu celebrations, which mark the Assamese New Year in mid-April.
Orunodoi Scheme: A Flagship Poverty Alleviation Initiative
Orunodoi is Assam's flagship poverty alleviation scheme, designed to provide financial assistance to eligible women beneficiaries. Under this program, recipients typically receive Rs 1,250 per month. The consolidated payout aims to offer substantial support, particularly in light of upcoming festivities and ongoing economic challenges.
Celebrating International Women's Day with Empowerment Focus
Marking International Women's Day, Sarma reiterated that women empowerment has been central to Assam's growth story. In a post on X, he wrote, "Empowering women has been central to Assam's growth story. From financial security to education, healthcare and entrepreneurship, our initiatives are helping lakhs of women step forward with confidence and independence." He added, "Today, we celebrate the strength and spirit of Assam's Nari Shakti."
Local Meetings and Public Engagement Planned
To commemorate this occasion, meetings will be held at the local level across the state. The Chief Minister has invited beneficiary families to attend these gatherings, emphasizing that the government's strength lies in the support of the people. This engagement effort is part of a broader strategy to foster community involvement and transparency in governance.
Political Context and Future Commitments
In another post, Sarma sought support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the elections, stating, "One right vote can change the voice inside every home. The focus of the BJP has been to empower Assam's Nari Shakti, and every action of ours reflects this belief." He asserted that efforts to empower women will continue with greater vigor and appealed to voters to "choose wisely" and support the BJP.
This announcement not only highlights the government's proactive measures in poverty alleviation but also reinforces its dedication to uplifting women through targeted financial aid and empowerment programs.
